Qatar Airways is seriously considering introducing premium economy and designing a new first-class cabin as the airline prepares for major fleet upgrades and an expansion of its Australian network.
Qatar Airways Group CEO Hamad Ali Al-Khater revealed the plans during a media briefing at Capella Sydney on Saturday, October 24, signalling a potential shift in the airline’s long-standing cabin strategy.
The airline is also assessing additional business-class seating, a redesigned next-generation Qsuite and a significant reduction in the number of cabin configurations across its fleet.
Asked whether Qatar Airways would introduce premium economy, Al-Khater confirmed the option was under serious consideration.
“It’s something that we’re seriously considering,” he said, adding: “So watch the space.”
The airline is also exploring a new first-class product, although neither cabin has a confirmed launch date.
“It’s under serious design,” Al-Khater said of the proposed first-class offering, explaining that Qatar Airways would proceed only if it could deliver a product that met customer expectations.
The potential changes come as international airlines increasingly compete for premium travellers, while Qatar Airways prepares for another major phase of growth.
Qatar Airways considers more business-class seats
Qatar Airways is reviewing its business-class configurations as demand for premium travel continues to influence airline strategies.
Al-Khater confirmed that the airline was assessing different seating arrangements, including the possibility of increasing business-class capacity on selected aircraft.
The airline currently offers its Qsuite business-class product across approximately 45 per cent of its widebody fleet.
However, Qatar Airways wants to create a more consistent passenger experience across its aircraft, with plans to reduce its cabin configurations from approximately 25 to nine by the middle of the next decade.
“The focus is going to be on consistency, whether it’s on product, service, air and ground,” Al-Khater said.
The next-generation Qsuite is also approaching its anticipated introduction, with the first installation expected aboard an Airbus A350 during the European summer of 2027.
The upgraded cabin will feature enhanced privacy and more flexible seating arrangements, including redesigned quad suites for families and groups.
Paired window seats will also be capable of opening into a shared space, giving passengers greater flexibility when travelling together.
Qatar Airways targets 70 weekly flights with Virgin Australia partnership
Australia remains a major focus of Qatar Airways’ expansion strategy, with the airline and Virgin Australia targeting approximately 70 weekly flights between Australia and Doha by the end of 2026.
Qatar Airways currently operates approximately 28 weekly services under its own network arrangements, with plans to increase this to at least 35.
Melbourne is moving towards double-daily services, while flights to Canberra via Melbourne are expected to return in December. Sydney is also set to receive a third service.
The partnership with Virgin Australia, which launched international flights in June 2025, has created opportunities for further cooperation beyond routes and aircraft operations.
Al-Khater said the airlines were discussing potential developments in loyalty programs, customer experience, digital integration and airport lounges.
The objective is to deliver a more seamless experience for passengers travelling across both networks.
Qatar Airways also plans to open four new lounges globally in 2027, while exploring additional opportunities to improve the experience for Virgin Australia passengers.
The CEO also pointed to opportunities for closer engagement with Qantas through the Oneworld alliance.
Asked about the airlines’ previous relationship, Al-Khater said he did not intend to dwell on the past, while emphasising that the Virgin Australia partnership remained a priority.
Western Sydney Airport could reach daily flights ahead of schedule
Qatar Airways’ planned entry into Western Sydney International Airport could expand faster than initially expected.
The airline is scheduled to launch services between Doha and Western Sydney in December 2027, initially operating three flights per week.
The longer-term plan is to increase the service to daily by the end of 2028. However, Al-Khater suggested that target could be reached earlier.
“It could be early,” he said when asked whether daily operations might begin ahead of schedule.
The CEO highlighted the airport’s 24-hour operating capability and the growing population across Western Sydney as important factors behind the decision.
He also confirmed that Qatar Airways would have committed to the airport even without financial incentives.
“We would have, yes,” he said.
While incentives can influence airline decisions, Al-Khater said the strength of the surrounding passenger market was ultimately more important.
Cargo opportunities are another consideration, with Qatar Airways looking to connect Australian agricultural producers, natural resource exporters and other businesses with international markets.
The new airport is expected to provide an additional gateway for passengers and freight, complementing the airline’s existing Sydney operations.
Qatar Airways plans to add 138 aircraft
Qatar Airways is preparing for a major fleet expansion, with plans to add approximately 138 aircraft over the next five years, including more than 15 in 2027.
At the same time, the airline intends to retire approximately 17 ageing Airbus A330 aircraft.
Al-Khater said the older aircraft no longer delivered a product consistent with the airline’s brand and customer expectations.
Future deliveries are expected to include Airbus A350s, Boeing 787s and Airbus A321LR aircraft, while the airline continues to look towards the Boeing 777-9.
Qatar Airways is targeting January 1, 2027, for the introduction of its first A321LR service, coinciding with the beginning of its 30th anniversary year.
The aircraft will feature 16 business-class seats in a 1-1 configuration, offering passengers greater privacy than the airline’s existing narrowbody products.
The airline expects to receive approximately 60 aircraft from the A321neo family, including 10 long-range A321LR variants.
The A321LR aircraft will also feature Starlink connectivity from the outset, as Qatar Airways continues investing in onboard internet access and entertainment.
The airline’s broader objective is to narrow the gap between the experience offered on long-haul widebody aircraft and that available on smaller connecting aircraft.
If the plans progress, Qatar Airways passengers could eventually benefit from a more consistent premium experience across a larger proportion of the airline’s global network.
For Australian travellers, the combination of additional flights, new aircraft and potential cabin upgrades could make the airline’s next phase of expansion particularly significant.
