SAN ANTONIO — Emanuel "Vaquero" Navarrete wants a bloody fight. O’Shaquie "Ice Water" Foster has other plans.
That was the tension at Thursday’s final press conference before Saturday’s super featherweight unification at Frost Bank Center, where two of the best 130-pound fighters in the world will fight for all three major belts. Navarrete (40-2-1, 33 KOs) holds the WBO and IBF titles. Foster (25-3, 12 KOs) holds the WBC. The winner owns the division, and host Chris Mannix said that fighter is likely the fighter of the year and probably walks into the pound-for-pound top 10.

The styles are the story. Top Rank’s Brad Jacobs described the boxer in Foster against what he called the “crazy style” of Navarrete, a champion who comes forward looking for a fight. Foster’s trainer, Bobby Benton, called this his fighter’s best camp and was blunt about what happens if Navarrete follows through on his promise to stick his chin out and invite punches. “If he puts his chin out there like that, he’ll go to sleep,” Benton said.
Navarrete spoke in Spanish, with Top Rank’s Gabe Rivas translating, and made it clear he does not want a chess match. “What I don’t want is an entire night where we’re just jabbing each other to see who can land more jabs,” he said. “They want to see a war.” He described the fight he wants as “an attractive fight, a tough fight, maybe even a bloody fight.” He would not promise a knockout, calling Foster hard, complicated and strong, and said he is not interested in Foster’s game plan, only in defending titles that “have cost me a lot” with “blood, sweat, and heart.”

Their last fights help explain how Saturday could play out, starting with the scale. In May 2025, Navarrete needed extra time to make weight for Charly Suarez, and a cut over his left eye ended that fight early and sent it to the scorecards. Mannix asked what changed when Navarrete followed that with a dominant February win over Eduardo Nuñez, then the IBF champion and a puncher with 27 knockouts in 29 wins. Navarrete’s trainer, Pedro Navarrete, said the champion is a big fighter who has struggled to make weight, and that a nutritionist was added for the Nuñez fight and again this camp. The results showed. Navarrete broke Nuñez down until the ringside doctor stopped the fight one second into the 11th round. “We corrected certain things and worked differently, from nutrition to the type of preparation,” Navarrete said.
Friday morning delivered the answer. Both fighters made weight, so the fight is on. Navarrete stepped on the scale at exactly 130 pounds, the division limit, and Foster weighed 129.8. After a camp built around a nutritionist and a history of trouble on the scale, Navarrete hitting the number was the best news his corner could get heading into the final day before the fight.
Foster’s last fight was a different kind of test. In May in Houston, the 32-year-old from Orange, Texas, shoved Raymond Ford through the ropes and out of the ring in the first round, then spent the rest of the night solving an aggressive challenger. Ford had success early, but Foster took over late with his jab, his distance control and his counterpunching, bloodied Ford’s nose in the 11th and won a majority decision. He outlanded Ford 106-99, though the cards were not unanimous, with one judge scoring it even. “All I needed to do was adjust,” Foster said afterward.
That is the same word he used Thursday. Foster, a two-time champion, spent most of his time at the podium arguing that this fight is overdue. He said he has been chasing it for almost three years, since he signed with Top Rank, and kept hearing no. “We’ve been asking for it. We’ve been calling for it,” Foster said. He called himself “ice water,” said being healthy since 2025 has him in the prime of his career, and said he will adjust to whatever Navarrete brings. When asked how he sees Saturday, he did not hedge. “I see it as a domination for me.”

He also did not buy Navarrete’s chin offer. “He don’t really like getting hit, in my opinion,” Foster said. “He’ll trade with you, but we’ll see.” And he promised Navarrete will feel more than the jab. “I’ma show him I’m tough too.”
Put the two recent fights side by side and the question for Saturday gets simple. Navarrete, 31, looked his best against Nuñez, who pushed forward and traded with him, and Navarrete used his reach and his punching volume to take over. Foster looked his best against Ford by making an aggressive opponent miss and then pulling away late. Navarrete has said he plans to pressure Foster and attack the body so Foster slows down in the later rounds. Foster, who has won three straight since a controversial 2024 loss to Robson Conceição, says his answer is to stay calm and adjust.
The co-main event is worth watching too, especially for Southern California fans. Albert “Chop Chop” Gonzalez (18-0, 11 KOs), a 24-year-old from Moreno Valley who is trained by Robert Garcia, defends his NABF featherweight title against Fort Worth’s Edward Vazquez, a former two-time world title challenger. I was in Carson in July when Gonzalez stopped Aaron Alameda in two rounds on the Diego Pacheco card, and he was one of the fan favorites that night. Top Rank promoter Bob Arum has described him as a young, exciting fighter the company is excited about, and a strong showing on a card this big keeps him on the path toward a world title shot. As a San Gabriel Valley native, it is always good to see a Southern California fighter get this kind of spotlight.

Albert "Chop Chop" Gonzalez will co-headline the event on Saturday against Edward Vazquez in a 10-round featherweight bout to defend his NABF crown.
Frank "Ghost" Martin also makes his Top Rank debut against Tarik Zaina in a super lightweight bout at 140 pounds. Martin last fought Nahir Albright in February which resulted in a 10-round unanimous decision draw. He will look to get back on the win column against Zaina who is 18-3 with 12 knockouts.

This weekend promises to be one of the best cards of the year for boxing fans, and some fans on social media are already calling Navarrete-Foster a fight of the year contender. These two have been on a collision course for some time, and both have promised to give it everything they have. By the end of Saturday night, one fighter will hold all three belts, and the other will have to hear about it.
