Hot air balloons are taking to the skies across Luxor with the start of the tourist season, restoring one of the city’s most iconic attractions.
Operations had been suspended during the summer months due to soaring temperatures, which impacted operating conditions and safety.
As the weather moderates and tourist groups return to Luxor, balloon flights are gradually resuming their regular schedules, turning the sky above the West Bank into a daily spectacle for hundreds of tourists from around the world.
This resurgence coincides with a notable upturn in cultural tourism in Luxor, as visitors seek to combine tours of Pharaonic temples and tombs with the experience of soaring over the city in the early morning hours.
The flights offer aerial views of the Valley of the Kings, the Temple of Hatshepsut, the Ramesseum, the Colossi of Memnon, the Nile River, and the agricultural fields stretching between the East and West Banks.
Balloon flights had been officially suspended from June 1 through the end of August—at the request of Luxor-based operators and as a safety measure during the period of high temperatures.
Operations resumed as weather conditions improved, with flights gradually returning to the skies over the West Bank.
The scale of this activity highlights the importance of this tourism product to Luxor; the city ranks third globally in balloon flight volume, with its skies hosting approximately 11,000 flights annually—carrying nearly 216,000 tourists—during years of full operation.
New experiences
A member of the General Assembly of the Chamber of Tourism and Travel Companies, Mohamed Hassan, said that the resumption of hot-air balloon flights represents a significant addition to the new tourism season in Luxor, particularly as tourists now seek unique experiences rather than merely visiting traditional archaeological sites.
He added that this activity attracts interest from tourists of various nationalities, especially those arriving from European, Asian, and American markets.
Ballooning has become part of an integrated tourism ecosystem—comprising horse and camel rides, safari excursions, and visits to archaeological sites—which offers tourists the opportunity to spend a full day enjoying a diverse experience that combines culture, adventure, and leisure, he noted.
A tour organizer at Misr Travel in Luxor, Ibrahim Taha, said that hot air balloon rides have become a key feature that tour operators prioritize including in itineraries, particularly for first-time visitors to the city.
Taha noted a gradual rise in demand as the tourism season picks up, as the increased number of flights reflects the tourism recovery underway in Luxor.
