Notre Dame’s 28-24 loss to BYU last weekend shocked many around the college football world.
The Fighting Irish were ranked No. 2 in the country at the time, and some even picked them to win the national championship.
And in the aftermath of that loss, national talking heads have debated whether or not Notre Dame is overrated. At a time when seemingly everyone is taking shots and throwing shade at Notre Dame, former Ohio State head coach Urban Meyer is jumping on the bandwagon.
During a recent appearance on “Don’t @ Me” with Outkick’s Dan Dakich, Meyer revealed that he thinks Notre Dame gets away with playing an easy schedule, and if the Irish played an SEC-type schedule, they likely wouldn’t be a perennial national championship pick.
“That schedule, when I saw it in the preseason, I picked them to win the national (title) — if not win it, they’d be right there,” Meyer said. “I saw two games — one at BYU, where they have better players than BYU, and then I saw Miami coming to South Bend in November… I think that’s a true challenge.
“If they had to play Florida’s schedule, if they had to play Georgia’s schedule, heck if they had to play Ohio State’s schedule, you’re looking at a 2-3 loss team.”
The biggest criticism of Notre Dame this season has been the lack of playoff-caliber teams on its schedule.

...
Until Saturday, the Fighting Irish played six straight games against average teams. Their toughest test came against Bill Belichick and North Carolina nearly three weeks ago — a game they won 37-26.
The only teams that posed even a vague threat to Notre Dame were BYU, now ranked No. 2, and No. 1-ranked Miami. However, Notre Dame also plays No. 23-ranked SMU two weeks after facing the Hurricanes.
If Notre Dame can win one or both of those games, it’ll likely help cement its place in the College Football Playoff.
