AMPANG: The government is considering May 20 as the date for an annual Veterans Day to honour the service and sacrifices of Malaysian Armed Forces (MAF) veterans, said Defence Minister Datuk Seri Mohamed Khaled Nordin.
Speaking at the Armed Forces Veterans Association (PVATM) 100th National Annual General Assembly today, he said the proposal, which had received the support of the National Veterans Council, would be submitted for Cabinet approval before it could be implemented nationwide.
“If approved, the observance would serve as a platform to strengthen ties between veterans and the public while promoting greater recognition of their contributions to the country.
“The government and this country will never forget or abandon MAF veterans. We are not a nation that forgets the service and sacrifices of our soldiers. We are a nation that recognises their contributions and will always be grateful,” he said.
Mohamed Khaled also expressed confidence that PVATM would continue working with the Defence Ministry as a strategic partner in advancing veterans’ welfare.
He described PVATM as the voice and champion of MAF veterans, urging the association to use its annual general assembly to put forward ideas and proposals to strengthen the veterans’ support system and improve their long-term quality of life.
He also called on the association to discuss ways to strengthen its role as a strategic partner in community and national development.
“I would like to once again express my deepest appreciation and gratitude to PVATM for its contributions and hard work over the years.
“As it enters its second century, I hope PVATM will continue to excel in its efforts to champion the interests and welfare of veterans,” he said.
