We are being told that the Roll of Lawyers in Ghana has crossed the 13,000 mark, with a substantial number of practitioners concentrated in Accra, the reality is that competition within the legal profession is becoming increasingly intense.
There are good reasons why many young lawyers aspire to practise in Accra. The capital offers access to corporate clients, major commercial transactions, government institutions, high-profile cases and professional networks that can accelerate one’s career. It also presents opportunities for personal development and improved living standards for one’s family.
However, there is another side to the story that we must not ignore.
As the number of lawyers increases, competition for legal briefs, employment opportunities and even pupilage placements becomes tougher. You may be hardworking, competent and ambitious, yet find yourself struggling to secure the opportunities you need to establish your practice. Sometimes, the challenge is not a lack of ability but the difficulty of standing out in an increasingly crowded market.
My humble advice to young lawyers is this, when the pressure becomes unbearable, consider returning to your home region to build your career.
There is absolutely nothing wrong with starting your professional journey in Accra. But there is also nothing wrong with recognising when another environment may offer you a better opportunity to grow.
Your home region may have an untapped market for legal services. Individuals, businesses, traditional authorities, public institutions and other organisations require legal representation and advice. Many of these potential clients may prefer to work with a lawyer who is accessible, understands their environment and can build a lasting professional relationship with them.
More importantly, you may already have a network of people who know your character, appreciate your abilities and are willing to recommend your services. A single referral can introduce you to a client who subsequently refers several others. Over time, these relationships can become the foundation of a sustainable legal practice.
Consider the young lawyer who spends years in Accra waiting for a breakthrough brief, struggling to even get a law firm to practice with and competing for limited opportunities. Compare that with another lawyer who returns to their home region, starts modestly, builds relationships, serves clients diligently and gradually earns a reputation for competence and integrity.
Neither path guarantees success. However, the second lawyer may discover opportunities that would have remained hidden had they continued to measure professional progress solely by their presence in the capital.
Returning to your home region does not mean abandoning ambition. It may simply mean changing your strategy to suit the opportunities available to you. You can establish a practice, develop a clientele, gain courtroom experience, advise businesses and build financial stability before expanding your reach to other parts of the country.
Of course, you must be prepared to work hard. Your home region may have a smaller commercial market, fewer high-value transactions and its own professional challenges. Success will still depend on your competence, discipline, integrity, visibility and willingness to build your practice patiently.
The important thing is to avoid allowing the prestige associated with practising in Accra to cloud your judgment. A successful lawyer is not necessarily the one with an office in the capital, but the one who develops the capacity to serve clients effectively, sustain a practice and grow professionally.
Do not spend your entire career chasing opportunities in a market simply because everyone else wants to be there. Look around you. Identify unmet needs. Build relationships. Create value.
You can begin in your home region, establish yourself and eventually attract briefs from Accra and beyond. In today’s world, professional reputation and competence can travel far beyond the physical location of your office.
Young lawyers, let us learn to distinguish between ambition and the pressure to follow the crowd.
Accra may be the destination for some of us, but for others, the home region may be the very place where their legal careers take off.
Sometimes, the wisest career move is not to compete harder in the same crowded space, but to position yourself where your skills and services are most needed.
Congratulations to all newly qualified lawyers!
