Disciples II takes players to the dark fantasy world of Nevendaar, where humans, demons, undead and dwarves are anything but friendly toward one another. Instead of hectic real-time battles, the game offers classic turn-based strategy: Building armies, leveling up heroes, expanding cities and conquering enemy territories. The unit progression system is particularly interesting. Players who regularly send their troops into battle can develop them further and choose between different specializations. The following two screenshots show the original game:

Originally released in 2002, the strategy classic from Strategy First normally costs $5.99 on Steam. However, it's currently 80% off, bringing the price down to just $1.19. This isn't an extraordinary deal in itself. According to SteamDB, the game has been available at this price several times before. Nevertheless, picking it up right now could be particularly worthwhile. An independent developer has released Gallean, a free open-source remake that brings the classic up to date with 4K graphics, a modernized user interface and improved enemy AI. The following screenshot shows Gallean:
The remake is available to download for Windows and Linux from the official project website. However, Gallean requires additional game data from the original release, including graphics and sound files. The developer provides a conversion tool to transfer the necessary assets. Judging by the reviews, the classic is certainly worth checking out for strategy fans. On Metacritic, Disciples II: Dark Prophecy has a Metascore of 84. Its dark atmosphere and distinctive visual style were particularly well received at the time, while the gameplay was praised for being highly engaging. The reception on Steam is also positive, with 83% of nearly 1,600 user reviews recommending the game.

As a child in the 90s, my Gameboy was my steady companion. After school, the PlayStation was fired up. When I finally got my first PC, I was completely hooked. My passion for gaming has never waned since. For me, writing for Notebookcheck means reporting on topics that are really close to my heart - in addition to gaming, I also like to write about e-mobility, photovoltaics and innovative gadgets. When I'm not sitting at my computer, I'm probably on water rescue duty on the Baltic coast or trying to counteract the downsides of my geek life - namely sitting for long periods - at the local swimming pool.
