The geographic distribution of one of Morocco’s most dangerous scorpions could expand significantly into the country’s northern and northwestern regions in the coming decades due to climate change.
According to a recent study published in the scientific journal Toxicon on October 1, 2026, shifting temperatures and soil humidity levels will likely create more favorable ecological conditions for the highly toxic Androctonus mauritanicus scorpion between 2061 and 2080.
Researchers utilized mathematical and climate models to map the current distribution of the species and project its future habitat. The anticipated expansion into new territories has raised new concerns regarding long-term public health prevention strategies and the monitoring of venomous animals in previously unaffected areas of the Kingdom.
