London council shames fly-tippers by posting photos of them dumping rubbish after announcing crackdown

A London council has begun shaming fly-tippers by posting photographs of them on social media leaving rubbish on the street amid a major crackdown.

Officials at Hillingdon Council said they were furious at residents who 'continue to think they can dump rubbish and drive away without consequences'.

Enforcement teams identified a hotspot outside the car park for St Anselm's Church in Hayes where people have been spotted regularly leaving their bin bags.

Now, the local authority has posted photos of the culprits on its Facebook page and is asking locals to help them identify those responsible by getting in touch.

Hillingdon announced a fly-tipping crackdown last month, warning residents that they could face an immediate fine of up to £1,000 and possible prosecution.

The borough has crushed the first vehicle linked to illegal dumping locally, after a Ford Iveco flatbed truck was caught leaving waste on a residential road in Ickenham.

The council's anti-social behaviour team located the vehicle using its CCTV network, before seizing it in Hayes, impounding it and crushing it on September 3.

Councillor Adam Bennett, Hillingdon Council's cabinet member for community, environment and enforcement, said: 'Where we have the evidence, we will use every enforcement power available to hold those responsible to account.

'Fly-tipping damages our environment and communities, and there is no excuse for dumping waste illegally when a range of free or low-cost disposal options are available.

'We all have a role to play in keeping Hillingdon clean, so I would urge residents to dispose of their waste responsibly and report any incidents of fly-tipping to us.'

But the council said it could not remove an abandoned HGV on the A40 slip road between Denham and Swakeleys roundabout, which has become a fly-tipping hub.

The authority said it had asked National Highways to take the vehicle away, because it is on land not under the council's control and they therefore cannot move it.

The number of fly-tipping cases all councils had to deal with last year jumped nearly 10 per cent on the previous year to 1.26million, official figures revealed in February.

Local authorities in England recorded a 9 per cent rise in fly-tipping incidents in 2024/2025 from the 1.15million they had to deal with in 2023/2024, and the highest figures since new methods for recording cases were introduced in 2018/2019.

The figures from the Environment Department (Defra) related to rubbish illegally dumped on public land, with private landowners across the country facing clear-up costs from the scourge of having waste fly-tipped on their property.

Hillingdon Council urged anyone who recognises those in the fly-tipping photos to 'get in touch confidentially' by emailing: publicprotection@hillingdon.gov.uk
