François Cros has one season left at Stade Toulousain before he joins Lyon, a knee that will never be entirely right, and, on Friday 13 November at the Stade de France, the chance to face the side that ended France’s World Cup by a single point, in the same stadium, three years ago.
If you’ve watched Toulouse or France at any point in the last eight years, you’ll know the job Cros does, even if you’ve never once seen it on a highlights reel. He’s the angry ruck janitor, the man who tut-tuts at the untidiness of a breakdown and spends his working life sweeping it up with a dustpan and brush so that the Duponts and the Ramoses of this world can get on with the glamorous stuff. He clears, he tackles, he connects, he covers the hole somebody else has left, and he brings order to whatever chaos the ball has just fallen into.
Last season asked something rather different of him, because for months the body that does all that sweeping needed exactly the same care and intelligence he usually spends on everybody else’s mess.
A persistent knee problem kept him out until January, then followed him through the Six Nations and all the way to Toulouse’s run-in, and he came back earlier than his body would have chosen, because he knew the matches that define a season were coming and he had no intention of watching them from a tracksuit.
“I pushed myself to come back as quickly as possible at the beginning of 2026,” he told Jérémy Fadat of Midi Olympique this week. “I had to play a lot of rugby with the pain. That is something I’m used to doing, like many players. When you are fortunate enough to experience ends to seasons like that, with incredible knockout matches and trophies at stake, you want to make the extra effort to be part of them.”
He rarely got anywhere near full physical capacity, and at 32 he’s stopped expecting to; what concerns him now is reaching whatever maximum his body has available on a given day and using experience to make up the difference, and even the pre-match nerves have become something to manage, where once they were just something he put up with.
“I haven’t always been at 100 per cent, and that happens less and less as you get older and accumulate injuries. People often say stress before a match helps you concentrate, but it also uses a lot of energy. With experience, I can approach games in a more open and settled way. That allows me to save a little.”
Two weeks in Philadelphia
Cros could carry the knee through the Six Nations and the domestic run-in because he knew a proper window for rehabilitation would follow, and during the summer he travelled with Toulouse hooker Julien Marchand to Philadelphia, where the pair spent a fortnight under Bill Knowles, a rehabilitation specialist whose reputation and record of results are about as good as they come in the business.
“We worked specifically on the knee every day,” Cros says. “We couldn’t have done that during the season unless we had stopped playing completely, and the calendar is so full.”
The work itself was deliberately simple, exercises built to restore mobility and range of movement whilst rebuilding strength without provoking more pain, and the difficult part, as any player with a chronic joint will tell you, lay in the dosage.
“If I do too much, it becomes inflamed and that is harmful. We felt the difference in two weeks. I gained confidence in the method and in my ability to work harder because my knee was no longer painful.”
A Toulouse physiotherapist travelled with the pair so the method came home with them, and the exercises have since been used on Juan Cruz Mallía and Clément Vergé, which is very much how Toulouse like to do things: one man’s rehab becomes everybody’s rehab. Giving up two weeks of a family holiday wasn’t a decision taken lightly, mind you. His wife Jennifer, a hooker for Stade Toulousain’s women, had watched him limp through ordinary life, including the time he spends playing with their daughter Lili, and getting the knee right mattered for reasons that had nothing to do with the next match. He’s realistic about what’s underneath it, too.
“I’m not cured because these are degenerative problems. There is always something beneath the surface, so I have to remain vigilant. But the knee troubles me far less than it did last season.”
France‘s coaches had shown their faith in the spring by starting him in all five matches of the Six Nations despite the fact that he’d played precisely once beforehand, which tells you a good deal about how Fabien Galthié views the left-channel back-row, and he credits France physiotherapist Bruno Boussagol with getting him through the campaign. But something had to give eventually, and playing in the summer Nations Championship on top of the Six Nations and the end of the club season would have cost him the rehabilitation window the knee needed.
“I needed that time to rest and work on my health. It proved to be the right decision. I wouldn’t say I feel liberated, but I am much better.”
The game he’s never watched back
The timing of the trip also reflects an ambition that hasn’t left him since 15 October 2023, when France went out of their own World Cup to South Africa, 28-29, at the Stade de France, the margin being the conversion Cheslin Kolbe read, chased and charged down whilst most of the stadium was still celebrating the try. Cros came off the bench that night, and the Springboks have been under his skin ever since.
“In the Top 14, you play every weekend and have opportunities to put things right. With France and the World Cup, it is harder. You have to wait four years, which is a very long time considering everything that can happen.”
When I sat down with him and Jennifer for Rugby Journal, speaking in 2025, he was as forensic about that night as he is about a ruck, and the harsh truth is that he didn’t put the loss down to the 80 minutes at all.
“I’ve never watched the game back,” he told me. “I don’t want to. I won’t take time to look because I can’t change anything. But, if I have the luck to play again against South Africa or in a World Cup, maybe I’ll look at this game to learn why we failed to close out this match, only a point away. My biggest frustrations lie outside of those 80 minutes. I was inside the team, and for me, we didn’t lose on the field, we lost it before. Our preparation was too long, we didn’t go hard enough. I remember during the warm-up Tests when the South Africa team put out a photo of their intense gym sessions, it was a different mentality.”
He went further than most French internationals would have dared, and it bears repeating with the Springboks due in Paris on Friday 13 November for round five of the Nations Championship.
“When the competition started, even then our preparation was out. We didn’t continue to work, and perhaps got sidetracked by the various media, sponsor and other commitments in the tournament. When we played South Africa, we were equally as good, if not better, players on an individual skill set level. But in terms of physicality, they were way better than us and it showed in the final result. It’s a symptom of our rugby. French flair is something we hear often and there’s an over-reliance on that focus. We tend to put less intensity into preparation, but this needs to change. We must find a balance.”
He learnt that lesson early, he told me, at U16 level, watching an opponent walk off to a protein shake from the strength and conditioning staff whilst his own side were handed water. Read all of that against a fortnight of knee exercises in Philadelphia and the summer competition he turned down, and the man’s thinking is as tidy as his ruck work. South Africa have won the last two meetings in Paris, the quarter-final and the 32-17 in November 2025 when they lost Lood de Jager to a red card before half-time and won with 14 anyway, and the series stands at 29 Springbok wins to 12 with six draws.
The senior man
His return has brought a gradual shift in status as well. Against Exeter, Cros made his 50th Champions Cup appearance, and he received the landmark in the way you’d expect from a man who regards a clean ruck as its own reward, with a smile and a line about it being a pleasure simply to continue playing rugby.
His influence now runs well beyond his own tackle count. When a youthful Toulouse side went to Castres, Cros captained a team with several players making their first senior appearances, and it wasn’t his first start as skipper either; nearly a decade earlier he’d led Toulouse at the same ground and lost 52-7. The return visit went rather better, a tight, physical, unspectacular win that mattered to Cros because it gave the younger players proof they belonged, which is a far more useful thing to take home from Castres than a try-fest.
“When you meet the physical challenge, it becomes easier to express yourself. I think the result allowed some of them to make that shift and realise they could perform alongside us.”
As a young professional he learnt from Thierry Dusautoir and Jerome Kaino, two men who knew a thing or two about the unglamorous end of the back-row, and time has now made him the senior player the youngsters watch at training.
“I relied enormously on the players above me. Now it is my turn to play some of that role for the younger players. It won’t change my personality or the way I work.”
The hardest decision
Away from the knee, Cros faced a decision that drained him more than any rehab session. His Toulouse contract ends in June 2027, and he’s agreed to join Lyon for three seasons, which brings to an end a relationship with his boyhood club that’s shaped his whole life, never mind his career. The process coincided with the start of pre-season, and as the questions piled up the sleep got scarcer and the fatigue worked against everything he was doing to control the knee, so he had to decide before the competitive season began.
“It was very difficult to manage,” he says. “Career decisions are never easy, particularly with the attachment and love I have for Stade Toulousain. I couldn’t see how I could perform without reaching a decision. I still find it difficult to talk about because it is fresh. I haven’t fully absorbed it.”
Leaving hasn’t dented his commitment to Toulouse in the slightest; if anything, knowing the end date has sharpened his desire to make the final season count, and for a player whose whole game is composure and selflessness, the thought of going briefly cracks the shell.
“It will be heartbreaking. That is simply how it is. Unfortunately, it will be my last here, but I want to be fully present, for myself, for the club and for the team. I want to make it as rich as it can possibly be.”
The leaving is for June. Before then there’s a season to finish at Ernest-Wallon and, three weeks from now, the Springboks back at the Stade de France.
