Jayapura (ANTARA) - Papua provincial government plans to expand exports of processed fish products to Los Angeles to broaden market reach and raise the economic value of the region's fisheries output.
Papua Marine and Fisheries Office Head Iman Djuniawal said in Jayapura on Friday that the province's processed fish has gained acceptance in the US market, an opportunity that must be nurtured and developed sustainably.
"Our products have been well-received there; this success must be maintained and sustained, as it represents a valuable opportunity for marketing beyond Indonesia," he said.
The products are shipped from Jayapura via Surabaya Port before being transported onward to the US, Djuniawal said.
"The raw materials used are sourced from the catches of small-scale fishers, which are then consolidated to meet production requirements," he said, adding that consistent international marketing adds value to Papua's fisheries sector, mainly by increasing uptake of local catches and fostering growth of fish-processing businesses.
"However, the sustainability of these exports depends on a reliable supply of raw materials to ensure smooth production processes and consistent, regular shipments," he said.
Shipments currently take place about once every three months, he said.
The goal is to raise that frequency to several times a week, provided fish supplies and production capacity can meet market demand.
"We believe that increasing fish supplies and strengthening processing capacity could unlock investment opportunities within the fisheries sector," Djuniawal said.
"These efforts are also expected to help transform Papua's marine potential into economically valuable commodities capable of competing in the global market," he added.
