Kansas had recently sanctioned girls flag football
The 2026 tournament marked a milestone for girls high school flag football in Kansas, following the sport’s approval as an official high school activity earlier that year. The Kansas State High School Activities Association’s board voted 61–1 in April 2026 to sanction the sport.
The decision established a pathway for school-sponsored teams to compete in an official state postseason. Kansas became the 18th state to sanction girls flag football, with the inaugural championship scheduled for October 17.

Schools confirmed their students were safe

St. Thomas Aquinas also confirmed that its students and families were safe. These updates addressed concerns about the high school teams participating in the nearby competition while the emergency response was underway.
