The Mariners apparently managed to lose a managerial candidate they never called. To be fair, it’s not even their fault. It’s on us…the media. Had we established that Seattle was even interested?
Regardless, Stephen Vogt is staying with the Cleveland Guardians, and Seattle’s contribution to the supposed homecoming story appears to have been providing a convenient location on the map.
Maybe Vogt’s name came up internally. The Mariners’ brass has been as tight-lipped as it gets about this search, leaving plenty of room for speculation. It’s understandable why fans kept coming back to Vogt. But according to Guardians president Chris Antonetti, Seattle never inquired.
The manager’s own explanation Thursday was considerably shorter than the speculation surrounding him.
“I’m coming back,” Vogt said.
Well, that should simplify the next round of candidate lists.
Look, we can understand how this became a conversation. Vogt’s family lives in Olympia. He worked as Seattle’s bullpen coach in 2023. The Mariners need a manager. Put those details together, and it has all the makings of a great story. Somewhere along the way, though, the appeal of the story started doing the work instead of actual phone calls.
And to be fair to everyone who liked the idea, Vogt brought considerably more to the conversation than an Olympia address.
He has led Cleveland to three consecutive AL Central titles in his first three seasons. Add two AL Championship Series appearances and AL Manager of the Year honors in each of his first two seasons, and we’re talking about someone with a substantial case for the job. The map isn’t the only appeal here.
For the Mariners, they need a guy who can navigate a full season’s problems and still have his club playing games in October. Vogt has already built a résumé around doing exactly that.
We can give Cleveland’s players, coaches and front office their share of the credit while recognizing that Vogt has handled his part well. Taking over after Terry Francona came with expectations, and the Guardians have kept winning division titles under his watch. It also helps explain why Cleveland would want to keep him. A successful manager under contract was always going to require more than Seattle having an opening and a convenient commute.
Stephen Vogt’s Seattle Connections Were Doing a Lot of Heavy Lifting
The family connection made Vogt worth discussing. It also involved real people making decisions considerably more complicated. Vogt spoke openly about the difficulty of working across the country from his wife and children. He also expressed affection for Cleveland.
“I love living here. I just wish I could be in two places at once,” he said.
That sounds like a father dealing with a difficult part of his profession. We should be able to hear that without immediately drawing up how he would shape the Mariners coaching staff.
There’s room for a little humility here from the speculation side. A plausible fit is a valid offseason conversation. We’re all guilty of participating in it. But once we start treating someone’s home address as evidence of his next career move, we’ve asked geography to carry a heavier load than the reporting.
Vogt is under contract beyond this season. Cleveland expects him back. The homecoming needed quite a few things to happen.
The Mariners Still Have an Actual Manager Search to Finish
For Seattle, we can retire this particular distraction and get back to evaluating the search itself.
Who gets interviewed? How does that person intend to help the hitters already here? That’ll give us a lot more than wishful thinking on Vogt. Familiarity is a layup for imagination. It’s not going to make the entire argument for hiring him.
And it would be even lazier to turn Vogt’s announcement into another Mariners rejection story. There’s no reported offer for him to have declined. Calling this a Seattle miss would give the Mariners credit for a pursuit that, by Antonetti’s account, never happened.
Seattle has a job to fill, and the eventual choice deserves scrutiny for their qualifications, approach and the organization’s reasons for choosing him.
Until then, we can enjoy the small absurdity of an offseason storyline reaching its dramatic conclusion.
TL;DR: Vogt is staying in Cleveland. The Mariners still need a manager.
