Volvo Cars reported a third-quarter operating loss of 3.7bn Swedish crowns ($373m), against a profit of 5.8bn a year earlier. Analysts had expected a loss of only 724m crowns, so the result was a shock, and the shares fell almost 30%. The Geely-owned carmaker will cut a further 2,500 jobs, around 6% of its workforce and mostly in Sweden, on top of 3,000 reductions announced earlier. It will also trim another 5bn crowns of indirect and variable costs, adding to a 23bn-crown savings programme. The shares are down more than two-thirds this year.
A warning that arrived early
The scale of the loss was new, but the trouble was not. On 2 October, Volvo scrapped its full-year volume and cash-flow guidance, blaming deteriorating conditions in China and a slower-than-expected US recovery. Third-quarter global sales fell 10.7% to 141,609 vehicles, with Greater China deliveries down 40.6% and the Americas down 14%.
One detail complicates the usual story. Fully electric sales rose 28.6% globally and made up 32% of the total, and Volvo said Europe stayed resilient on strong demand for its electric cars. Electrification is not simply failing. The damage is concentrated in two markets where pricing power has collapsed.
Margins tell the real story
The most telling figure in the results is the gross margin, which dropped to 14.7% from 20.4% a year earlier. That is a pricing problem, not just a volume one. Volvo is selling fewer cars and earning less on each.
Tariffs have been a persistent drag. In February, when Volvo reported a 68% fall in fourth-quarter profit, Donald Trump had initially raised import tariffs on EU cars to 27.5% from 2.5%, a rate later reduced to 15%. The removal of US electric vehicle incentives made matters worse. Meanwhile, Volvo has said the Chinese market is being reshaped by new competitors, particularly in electric vehicles.
Not just a Volvo problem
Rivals are suffering too. In June, BMW cut its 2026 automotive EBIT margin forecast to 1–3% from 4–6%, pointing to a deepening slowdown in China and higher energy costs linked to the Iran war. That was its third China-linked profit revision in two years. Reuters has described European manufacturers as facing a reckoning, with McKinsey counting 350 new electric models planned by 2032 as they race to match nimble Chinese competitors.
Volvo is more exposed than most. It has no German-style domestic scale to fall back on, a heavy reliance on exports to the US, and a Chinese market where local brands set the pace.
A strategy shift, with risks
The most significant announcement is the decision to prioritise margins over market share in China, and to take the same approach in the US. It is an admission that fighting domestic rivals on price is unwinnable. Chinese manufacturers benefit from cheaper supply chains and, in many cases, state support, which allows them to sustain price cuts that a premium European brand cannot.
The risk is that shrinking volumes leave fixed costs spread across fewer cars, which only deepens the margin squeeze. Volvo is betting it can protect profitability without ceding too much ground, and so far the numbers argue otherwise. Free cash flow was negative 5.2bn crowns in the third quarter.
Leadership and ownership
There is a change at the top coming. Volvo said last month that Skoda boss Klaus Zellmer will become chief executive within a year, succeeding Hakan Samuelsson. Geely’s majority ownership gives Volvo access to shared platforms and cost synergies, which management says it has only begun to exploit. It also ties Volvo’s fortunes to a parent whose home market is the source of much of the pressure.
What to watch
Volvo insists its longer-term goals are intact, namely strong positive cash flow and an 8% EBIT margin. Samuelsson expects the latest cuts to finish by mid-2027 but has not ruled out more if the plan falls short. For a brand built on Swedish engineering, the job losses at home will be politically sensitive.
The next two quarters will show whether discipline can stabilise the business, or whether Volvo is simply shrinking into a smaller, less profitable company.
