If your idea of a poncho involves a questionable holiday purchase or something your auntie throws over her shoulders at a barbecue, allow Chloé to change your mind. For autumn/winter ‘26, creative director Chemena Kamali sent out a series of cape-like layers that made us reconsider everything we thought we knew about the humble throw on. Five standout looks, from tartan and checks to camel wool and high-neck styles, proved that when it comes to autumn outerwear, sometimes more fabric really is more.
Styled over flowing dresses and fancy trousers, these weren't the shapeless blankets of our sartorial nightmares. They were bohemian and decidedly expensive-looking, with funnel necks and structured collars giving the silhouettes a little more purpose. One camel version with dark trim looked particularly convincing as an alternative to the usual winter coat.
And Chloé isn't operating in isolation, capes have been appearing across the runways too, with Dior among the designers giving the silhouette a fresh outing. It seems fashion has decided our arms deserve a little more freedom.
A poncho can transform an outfit without requiring an entirely new wardrobe, and there are more options than you might think. Knitted versions offer the cosy appeal of ajumper without committing to sleeves, while jacket iterations with zips or structured shoulders provide a more practical alternative to traditional outerwear. Then there are shawl cardigan hybrids: perfect for anyone who wants the blanket comfort without looking as though they've arrived at the office straight from the sofa.
How to wear one now? The trick is to balance all that fabric. Take a cue from Chloé and layer a camel or checked style over a flowing midi dress, finishing with knee-high boots. For everyday dressing, a knitted poncho looks great over stovepipe jeans, a fitted top and loafers. If you're wearing a particularly voluminous style, try slimmer trousers to give the outfit some shape.
If your budget stretches to the runway, Chloé is the obvious starting point for elevated ponchos. Desigual is worth exploring for more characterful outerwear and statement styles. On the high street, Zara's bandana cape offers a more accessible way into the look.
Consider this your permission to give your coat a little competition. The poncho has officially left the lost property box.
