TP-Link has planned to assemble its next-generation Wi-Fi routers in the United States as the country tightens restrictions on new consumer networking devices made overseas. The company has signed a letter of intent with US-based electronics manufacturer Key Tronic to begin assembling its Wi-Fi 8 products in Corinth, Mississippi, potentially as early as 2027. The plan remains subject to US regulatory approval.
The move comes as the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) restricts approvals for new consumer routers manufactured outside the US, citing national security concerns. The policy has created challenges for router makers that rely on overseas manufacturing to supply the American market.
Key Tronic Partnership Targets Wi-Fi 8 Production
Under the proposed arrangement, Key Tronic would become a key US manufacturing partner for TP-Link. The initial focus will be the company's Wi-Fi 8 networking products, which are designed to improve connection reliability and reduce latency in busy home networks.
TP-Link has not confirmed an exact production start date. Its announcement says assembly could begin as early as next year, depending on regulatory approval. The agreement is currently a letter of intent, meaning the companies have outlined their plans but have not necessarily finalized every detail of the arrangement.
Why US Manufacturing Matters for TP-Link
In March 2026, the FCC introduced restrictions on new consumer routers manufactured outside the United States. The policy affects new devices seeking approval for the US market, although it does not automatically ban existing routers and previously approved models.
The restrictions have pressured manufacturers to reconsider where they produce their networking equipment. TP-Link has also been seeking regulatory approval for its upcoming Wi-Fi 8 devices. Establishing domestic assembly could help the company adapt to the changing rules, although the manufacturing plan alone does not guarantee approval for its products.

A Wider Push to Expand US Production
The planned assembly operation is part of TP-Link's broader effort to increase its investment in the United States. In an earlier regulatory filing, the company outlined a nearly $1 billion investment plan covering domestic research, development, and manufacturing, with the potential to create hundreds of jobs.
For consumers, the immediate impact may be limited because the new assembly line is still in the planning stage. However, the development highlights how government trade and security policies are influencing technology supply chains.
If the partnership proceeds as planned, TP-Link could begin assembling Wi-Fi 8 routers in Mississippi in 2027. The next step will depend on regulatory decisions and the companies' progress in turning the proposal into an operating production line.
