Police have recovered the hanging body of a postgraduate student of Comilla University from a rented house in Fatullah, Narayanganj, with her family alleging that she was tortured and killed over dowry demands.
The deceased, Farzana Islam, was a postgraduate student in the university's Pharmacy Department. Her husband, Nazmul Islam, a former student of the same department, has been taken into police custody for questioning.
Her body was recovered from a rented house in the Signboard area of Fatullah around 11pm yesterday (24 October).
Farzana's brother, Ariful Islam, alleged that his sister had been physically tortured over dowry demands since their marriage. She left her husband's home and returned to her father's house in December last year amid the abuse, he said.
She later filed a case against her husband over violence against women.
According to Ariful, the two families recently reached an understanding and took steps to withdraw the case. He alleged that his sister was killed in a planned manner after the withdrawal was confirmed.
He added that he had spoken to her just hours before her death and that their conversation had been normal.
Sub-Inspector Gazi Sumon Mahtab of Fatullah Police Station, who visited the scene, said police found Farzana hanging and took her husband into custody for questioning.
He said the incident initially appeared to be a suicide.
"The actual cause of death cannot be confirmed without the autopsy report," he said.
Police are investigating the family's allegations and other aspects of the incident, the officer added.
