Darien celebrated three state championships in girls sports last school year: field hockey, girls ice hockey and girls lacrosse.
Adriana Gromelski was an integral part of all three as she earned GametimeCT All-State First Team honors in each sport and was named GametimeCT Female Athlete of the Year.
In all, Gromelski has been part of six state titles during her time with the Blue Wave.
"Only one team can win it. It's a moment not everyone gets to have," Gromelski said. "I'm super grateful I've gotten to experience it multiple times."
With that in mind, the senior star decided to switch sports this fall for a new high school experience. Instead of helping Darien defend its CIAC field hockey crown, Gromelski switched to soccer. It's a sport she played from elementary school through eighth grade.
Gromelski has already chosen her sport and college: Yale University to play lacrosse. She also considered Harvard, Cornell and Princeton in her search for a school with strong academics.
Gromelski, who is planning to play three sports again in her final season, said she thought about switching to soccer as last school year came to a close. She even discussed it with her parents. She decided to start by playing soccer with her friends in a summer league.
"I played a lot in the summer league with the team and I loved it," Gromelski said.
She called Darien field hockey coach Maureen Minicus to let her know about the switch.
"I wanted to do what I felt was best for me. I made the right decision," Gromelski said.
Gromelski was an offensive juggernaut her junior year, scoring more than 100 goals combined across three sports. She had 28 goals and 10 assists to help the Blue Wave win the Class L field hockey title. In the winter, Darien girls hockey won the state championship, as Gromelski finished with 35 goals and 17 assists to earn CHSGHA Player of the Year honors.
She had 38 goals, including consecutive hat tricks in the Class LL semifinals and final, to help the Blue Wave complete an undefeated season with a second straight CIAC crown.
This fall, she has been trying to score goals as a field player, in addition to trying to stop them as a goalkeeper.
"I definitely had to knock some of the rust off because it's been so long (since she played soccer)," Gromelski said.
Gromelski said she played either goalkeeper or center midfielder on her youth teams. Now she is getting to play multiple positions for her high school team.
"It's actually really fun," Gromelski said. "It's been a great change for me. I've been enjoying it as much as possible."
