FAYETTEVILLE — Arkansas does not get extra credit for having a bye week. Missouri has one, too. That is the first thing worth remembering as the Razorbacks turn from their Vanderbilt breakthrough toward the Oct. 31 home matchup. The game is scheduled for 6:45 p.m. Central on SEC Network, and both staffs have time to prepare.
The open date is an opportunity, not an advantage Arkansas has already secured. Ryan Silverfield’s team finally knows what an SEC win feels like. Now it needs to use the break to understand how to improve the chances of another one. That work should begin with the film from Nashville rather than a search for an entirely new identity.
Keep the Offense That Helped Jackson
Jackson completed 21 of 31 passes for 251 yards without an interception against Vanderbilt. Arkansas also rushed for 187 yards. Those numbers belong together.
The staff should identify how the ground game helped create passing opportunities and which calls gave Jackson the clearest decisions. The objective is not to preserve every play that gained yards. It is to preserve the relationships that made the offense function.
Missouri will study the same film. Arkansas needs a response ready when the Tigers try to remove what worked best. That means counters that fit the existing offense, not additions that require the players to become something different during the break.
Decide What the Backfield Needs to Look Like
The rushing distribution gave Arkansas several contributors. Jackson gained 58 yards, Braylen Russell added 51 and Settles supplied 45 with two touchdowns.
Smith also produced 29 yards on four carries. The bye gives the staff time to review how those opportunities were assigned. Which combinations helped the blocking? Which backs fit particular situations? Did the rotation respond to the game, or did it occasionally limit a productive option?
Those questions should include each player’s actual physical condition. Smith’s injury history matters, but it cannot be treated as confirmation that he was limited against Vanderbilt. Arkansas needs a plan flexible enough to use the healthiest, most effective options available when Missouri arrives.
Fix the Space Around the Defensive Highlights
Johnson’s interception return and Mitchell’s late takeaway helped win the game. Vanderbilt still finished with 390 yards, including 274 passing. The defensive staff needs to evaluate how the Commodores reached those numbers. Where did receivers find space? When pressure arrived, did the coverage remain connected? When a play extended, did Arkansas preserve its responsibilities?
The corrections should be specific. A defense cannot simply decide to create two more interceptions. It can improve its alignment, communication, pursuit and tackling so that an opponent has to execute more successfully to sustain a drive. That is a more dependable foundation than waiting for another game-changing mistake.
Practice the Possessions That Decide the Game
The late scoring drive in Nashville should become teaching material. Arkansas received a takeaway, faced third-and-10, converted through Jackson and Jamari Hawkins, and eventually added Gilbert’s field goal. The offense helped protect the result instead of immediately returning the responsibility to the defense.
The staff should build on that sequence while preparing for less comfortable variations. What happens if Arkansas needs a touchdown? What happens if it is protecting a narrower lead? Which calls does the offense trust when the defense knows a conversion is essential?
Players should return from the bye understanding the situation before the pressure arrives. The coaches should have their own answers prepared, too.
Come Back Cleaner, Not Just Rested
Recovery is an important part of the break, but cannot be the entire plan. Arkansas needs to return with a clearer understanding of its most dependable personnel, its strongest offensive answers and the defensive mistakes it can correct immediately.
Missouri will have spent the same period preparing. The Razorbacks will not win the matchup by announcing that the bye was productive.
They can give themselves a better chance by looking prepared when the opening plan stops working and the game demands something else. Nashville supplied evidence that Arkansas can finish. The next two weeks need to make that evidence useful.
