Why Rays have all the momentum heading into Game 3 of ALCS vs. Guardians appeared first on ClutchPoints. Add ClutchPoints as a Preferred Source by clicking here.
The Tampa Bay Rays entered Tuesday facing the possibility of falling behind 2-0 in the American League Championship Series. Instead, their 3-1 victory over the Cleveland Guardians at Tropicana Field restored their confidence and shifted the pressure before Thursday’s Game 3 in Cleveland.
Freddy Peralta provided the biggest reason for optimism. The right-hander tossed six scoreless innings, allowing four hits and two walks while striking out six. He also reached 99.4 mph, the fastest pitch of his major league career. Acquired from the New York Mets in August, Peralta delivered exactly the kind of postseason performance the Rays desperately needed.
His outing also gave Tampa Bay a blueprint for attacking Cleveland’s lineup throughout the series. By limiting scoring opportunities and preventing the Guardians from building early momentum, Peralta allowed the Rays to play from ahead. That formula becomes increasingly important as the series moves to Progressive Field, where Cleveland will have the crowd behind them.

The bullpen reinforced that advantage. Kevin Kelly, Ian Seymour and Bryan Baker combined to finish the victory. Although Chase DeLauter hit a run-scoring double in the seventh, Seymour escaped further damage and Baker worked a perfect ninth for his fourth save of the postseason.
The Rays’ offense also demonstrated how its aggressive base-running can pressure opposing defenses. In the fourth inning, Victor Mesa Jr. advanced to third on Chandler Simpson’s infield single when Jose Ramirez failed to cover the bag. Ramirez then misplayed Ben Williamson’s grounder with two outs, allowing the Rays to plate their first run of the evening. Liam Hicks followed with a two-run single, extending the lead to 3-0. All three runs charged to Parker Messick were unearned, highlighting Tampa Bay’s ability to capitalize on Cleveland’s defensive mistakes.
That opportunistic approach matters against a Guardians team that won four consecutive playoff games before Tuesday. Cleveland scored seven runs in a Game 1 win, but Tampa Bay held its lineup to one in Game 2, interrupting the surge that had carried the Guardians through the Division Series.
The Rays also have evidence that their approach has worked vs. Cleveland. They took five of six regular-season meetings, outscoring the Guardians 20-8. Their 98-win season and three-game ALDS sweep of the New York Yankees further demonstrate their strength.
The Guardians will host Games 3, 4 and, if necessary, 5 at Progressive Field, giving them an opportunity to regain control of the series. However, the Rays avoided a potentially devastating 2-0 deficit and now head to Cleveland with renewed confidence. Their dominant pitching, aggressive base-running and ability to capitalize on mistakes could prove decisive as Tampa Bay looks to take control of the ALCS.
