The Nigeria Centre for Disease Control and Prevention (NCDC) has disclosed that the condition of the Ebola patient receiving treatment in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Abuja, has deteriorated to multi-organ failure.
The Director of Public Health Laboratory Service at the NCDC, Olajumoke Babatunde, disclosed this during an emergency meeting in Abuja on Wednesday.
Babatunde also confirmed that the patient was infected with the Bundibugyo strain of Ebola, adding that three levels of molecular testing were conducted to establish the strain.
“The patient’s condition has deteriorated. We did three levels of tests, but all were molecular. The strain was Bundibugyo,” she said.
The World Health Organisation (WHO) also confirmed the strain, which the report said currently has no approved vaccine or specific treatment.
The patient, identified as a female diplomat, reportedly travelled from Uganda to Abuja on October 3, 2026, before being admitted to a private hospital in the FCT.
According to the Incident Manager of the National Ebola Response, Dr Odianosen Ehiakhamen, the patient developed symptoms on October 7 and presented at the hospital on October 11.
She was initially treated for symptoms resembling malaria before Ebola was suspected.

Meanwhile, the NCDC said 44 close contacts had been identified and placed under monitoring as part of efforts to prevent further transmission.
The contacts include healthcare workers, other patients, caregivers and individuals linked to the patient’s travel.
The agency said the patient remained in isolation and was receiving medical care, while surveillance activities had been intensified to identify and monitor possible additional cases.
The health authorities are continuing their response to the case, with contact tracing and monitoring forming key parts of efforts to contain the potential spread of the virus.
