Breiden Fehoko has reignited debate over officiating involving the Kansas City Chiefs, alleging that referees have given the team favorable treatment as the former nose tackle has pointed to experiences during his playing career to explain why he believes opponents anticipate controversial calls at Arrowhead Stadium.
Fehoko made his criticism public on X.com, formerly known as Twitter, describing the Chiefs' home ground in stark terms as his accusation has renewed discussion about disputed decisions involving Kansas City.
New video angle! Chiefs benefit from controversial ref call in crucial drives
"Playing at Arrowhead Stadium is the most rigged venue in professional sports since Tom Brady left Foxborough," Fehoko said. "It has become a joke, and I believe players who have competed against the Kansas City Chiefs know exactly what I'm talking about.
"Throughout my NFL career, we would have meetings with officials, and coaches would remind us to prepare for the possibility of a call in this game that could shift the momentum in Kansas City's favor.
“This wasn't something we simply ignored. It was something we discussed and prepared for. I believe the NFL has a history of giving favorable treatment to teams and players who represent its biggest markets and most valuable storylines."
The Chiefs' high-profile status has kept the franchise under scrutiny, with Patrick Mahomes and Travis Kelce perceived to be on the winning end of several controversial decisions.
One prominent example came in Kansas City's 26-25 victory over the Cincinnati Bengals during the 2024 season as with 48 seconds remaining, Mahomes attempted a deep pass toward Rashee Rice on fourth-and-16, but the ball fell incomplete after apparently being tipped.
Officials subsequently penalized Bengals defensive back Daijahn Anthony for pass interference, extending the drive before Harrison Butker kicked the winning field goal.
However, replay footage shows the officials on the field before the pass falls incomplete.
Studies do not support Fehoko’s allegations
Ultimately, penalty totals offer a different perspective on claims that Kansas City receives preferential treatment as according to StatMuse figures supplied in the source material, the Dallas Cowboys have accumulated 1000 penalties across the regular season and playoffs since 2018, compared with 991 for the Chiefs.
Whilst ESPN's analysis also found Kansas City was penalized 126 times during the 2024 regular season, tied with the Tennessee Titans for the sixth-highest total in the league, equating to approximately 7.4 penalties per game, above the league average of 6.8.
The Chiefs' opponents received 95 penalties during the regular season as officials threw more flags against Kansas City than its opponents in 12 of 17 games, including penalties that were declined or offset.
Those figures, however, do not capture every disputed missed call and the postseason figures differed as Kansas City received fewer penalties than its opponents in all three playoff games covered by the analysis, including the AFC Championship Game.
The Chiefs were flagged three times compared with eight penalties against the Ravens however Mahomes had secured an early lead and managed the game in the second half, whilst Baltimore were chasing the game and their season.
Those results alone cannot establish bias, particularly given the limited postseason sample and over 17 playoff games across six seasons, Kansas City recorded fewer penalties in two of its three losses.
Meanwhile Super Bowl LV defeat to Tampa Bay featured 13 penalties against the Chiefs and four against the Buccaneers, meaning Fehoko's allegations therefore remain a matter of opinion.
