The Central Investigation Chief Prosecutor’s Office (KNYF) has issued international arrest warrants for Ádám Matolcsy, the son of the former central bank governor, and businessman György Stofa in connection with the MNB (central bank) case. On Wednesday, a lawyer and another individual were also arrested, along with former central bank governor György Matolcsy.
The KNYF said that György Matolcsy, former president of the Hungarian National Bank, and his alleged accomplices had been questioned as suspects and taken into custody in an ongoing investigation into financial fraud causing particularly substantial losses and other criminal offenses.
Investigators searched several locations and seized evidence in a large-scale operation.
According to Dániel Deák, the case centers on the management of the MNB’s foundations and the loss of several hundred billion forints, Magyar Nemzet writes. The political commentator emphasized that the scandal had prompted leading FIDESZ politicians to demand accountability as well. In March of this year, Máté Kocsis, then FIDESZ parliamentary group leader, said during a panel discussion that Ádám Matolcsy, György Matolcsy’s son, belonged in prison if the allegations were true. Kocsis also stressed that the events surrounding the MNB had to be investigated through criminal proceedings and that no one could evade accountability.
Deák also suggested that
the timing of the arrests could work to Péter Magyar’s political advantage, allowing the TISZA leader to present the case as a major victory to his supporters.
However, he noted that the investigation into Matolcsy’s financial dealings had begun in March 2025, long before TISZA took office.
Last year, after an audit uncovered serious irregularities, the State Audit Office filed a criminal complaint, prompting the National Bureau of Investigation to open an investigation on suspicion of embezzlement. The Chief Prosecution Office of the Capital had already confirmed the launch of the investigation on March 21, 2025.

Political commentator Gábor Bencsik wrote on Facebook that the investigation had begun under the previous government, adding that the surprising thing was that the arrests had taken so long. He said it was up to the courts to determine exactly what had happened during György Matolcsy’s tenure as central bank governor, but added that “there can be no doubt that there are grounds for suspicion.”
Bencsik also acknowledged Matolcsy’s record as economy minister between 2010 and 2013, describing his performance as outstanding and crediting him with
playing a decisive role in stabilizing Hungary’s economy after 2010 and in the subsequent period of growth that lasted until 2018.
He also said Matolcsy had performed well during his first term as central bank governor. His second term, however, was a different story, marked by what Bencsik called “hubris.”
Bencsik said he did not believe Matolcsy had deliberately and knowingly broken the law, but suggested that he may have come to believe the rules did not apply to him. “Hundreds of billions of forints flowed through his hands, into who knows whose pockets,” the commentator wrote, referring to the money surrounding the central bank’s foundations. “Surely there are people who are not corrupted even by a long tenure in office. Matolcsy is not one of them. It is a shame,” Bencsik concluded.

The procedural measures will now have to be repeated.Continue reading
