The United Nations has warned that 15.9 million people in Afghanistan are facing acute food insecurity, with the situation expected to worsen during the winter.
In a report released on Sunday, October 18, the UN said that 3.4 million people are experiencing emergency levels of food insecurity.
Disease outbreaks, shortages of drinking water, and reduced access to nutrition services have been identified as factors contributing to the crisis.
The organization added that nearly 19.2 million people in Afghanistan are projected to face crisis-level food insecurity or worse between November and April.
Of these, five million people are expected to be in emergency conditions.
Meanwhile, an estimated 4.04 million children under the age of five are expected to require treatment for acute malnutrition between January and December 2027.
The World Food Programme (WFP) and the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) have called for urgent funding to support food assistance, farmers, and the treatment of malnutrition.
