SHILLONG, OCT 21: The Joint Action Committee Against Shillong Ropeway Project has rejected the government’s move to hold a briefing only with Laban Pyllun residents, demanding that all Shillong residents be included in the talks.
Referring to the government’s letter dated October 19, JAC Secretary Dr Linda Marbaniang on Wednesday said the matter concerns the entire city.
“This cannot be decided by Laban Pyllun alone. We are deeply concerned,” she said.
Dr Marbaniang urged the government to invite people who depend on Lum Shillong for water, Umiam for power and the Mawphlang source under the Greater Shillong Water Supply Scheme.
“We are not dishonouring you. We are only expressing our anxiety. As residents of Shillong, we need water, not a ropeway,” she said, while accusing the government of pursuing a divide and rule policy.
The JAC demanded that the project be relocated to another area where it is more needed and questioned why Lawsohtun — located near Lumparing and Bishnupur — was left out.
“Lawsohtun is part and parcel of us. Include it in the meeting called on October 22,” she said.
She also sought postponement of the October 22 meeting, saying it should include residents from Iewduh, Mawkhar, Jaiaw, Motphran, Riatsamthiah, Wahingdoh, Umsohsun, Laitumkhrah, Malki, Upper Shillong and Ri-Bhoi.
“All people living here need water, not just the people of Laban Pyllun. Hear our voice,” she said.
“We are not a bunch of idiots. Please don’t take us for a ride. We are God’s creation and God has given us power to protect nature, not destroy it. Water is God’s gift to humanity and you cannot take away our right to living,” Dr Marbaniang added.
