The Los Angeles Rams suffered the biggest upset loss in the NFL this season on Sunday, falling to the Arizona Cardinals, 18-16. They didn't allow a single touchdown but with an anemic offense, they couldn't capitalize on their defense's effort.
And once again, self-inflicted wounds were the story of the game. Tyler Higbee lost a fumble in the fourth quarter, the Rams failed multiple times on fourth down and on the Cardinals' game-winning drive, the Rams were called for a controversial unnecessary roughness penalty that gave Arizona a free 15 yards.
After dropping to 2-4 on the year, Sean McVay was understandably frustrated. He opened his postgame press conference by expressing some of that disappointment, saying the Rams "won't win a game" if they can't get out of their own way.
"We won't win a game unless we figure out how not to beat ourselves," McVay said. "Just so many unforced errors, so many things that are not in alignment with what we want to do, specifically on the offensive side of the ball."
The Cardinals deserve credit for shutting down the Rams' offense, but Los Angeles continues to commit far too many self-inflicted mistakes that prove to be the difference in games. And as many times as McVay has said the Rams must look inward and improve, nothing has changed.
"We have a lot to look at ourselves on, and we have to be able to go back to the drawing board and figure out how we improve because like I just told you guys, we need to be able to not beat ourselves before we figure how to even come away with some of the results," he said. "It's not even good enough and I've got to do a much better job and clearly, today, there is nothing positive I can say about today."
The Rams are 2-4, and three of those losses have been in heartbreaking fashion. Sunday's, however, was by far the most disappointing given the fact that no team had been outscored by more points this season than the Cardinals.
