"Depicting the innermost core of a family without excluding the audience is a cinematic feat. This film achieves it with flying colors," the jury writes in its citation.
The winner in the best international film category was "Nothing happens after your absence" by Ibrahim Omar from Sudan.
The two films now have a chance to be nominated for an Oscar, as the festival is recognized by the American Film Academy.
