For a relatively small country, Sri Lanka has an impressive range of hotels.
We’re talking everything from rainforest eco-lodges made for birdwatching and trendy beachfront villas, to colonial-era bungalows hidden amongst tea plantations.
I should know. Having been based on this beautiful island for over two years, I’ve been fortunate to stay in over 60 properties, both for my work as a travel writer and for pleasure.
There are lodgings for every taste and budget, as well as plenty of homogenised, social media-led Airbnbs and boutique hotels that seem to be taking over the world, one terracotta wall at a time.
Honestly, I’m not a fan of the bland copy-and-paste hotels that fill our Instagram and TikTok feeds. I much prefer unique places that focus on how a hotel makes you feel, rather than looking flawless on a screen.
With that in mind, I sought out some of the hotels that don’t get a lot
of love on social media, but are brilliantly unique, set in beautiful locations, and offer a flawless stay from check-in to check-out.
Here are some of my favourite secret(ish) stays in Sri Lanka.
Taru Villas Rampart Street, Galle
I’ve lost count of the number of times I’ve visited the stunning fort town of Galle, but I only recently found Taru Villas Rampart Street, and wow, what a find it is.
A secret sanctuary in the heart of the fort, this is by far one of the most beautiful and most discreet places to stay in the area, faultless in every way.
With just four bedrooms, it exudes the air of a private home, rather than a hotel, and, even better, there’s hardly a mention of it online.
With a pool at its heart and frangipani trees shading the garden, the colonial home’s walls are covered in works of local art, with lots of communal spaces to read and relax.
Plus, the staff are the best in the business, making every guest feel cared for and right at home. Don’t miss it.
Uga Riva, Negombo
In the rush to head to the beach or hill country, most tourists miss this
restored 180-year-old manor, yet it’s one of the country’s finest stays.
Surrounded by coconut palms and well-maintained gardens, Uga Riva draws an abundance of birds, including chirrupping mynas, sweet doves and bulbuls, to the glimmering swimming pool each afternoon.
Bedrooms are large, immaculate, and quiet. Some are in the original part of the building, and the structure itself is staggeringly beautiful, having been
restored with remarkable care.
To escape the Insta-crowds, this peaceful haven, just a 30-minute
drive from the airport, is the perfect place to start (or end) a Sri Lankan adventure.
It will appeal to architecture and history fans, massively.
The Warden’s House, Kataragama
I couldn’t love this four-bedroom luxury safari lodge more.
Hidden inland close to the important pilgrimage town of Kataragama, it sits well away from the heavily touristed parts of Yala National Park, offering a serene stay without the crowds.
Rarely posted about online, The Warden’s House is an in-the-know secret spot for wildlife lovers looking to enjoy a Sri Lankan safari within the lesser-visited Block 5 of Yala.
Close to an idyllic stretch of the Menik River where I’ve often taken a dip, the area around the hotel is a nature-lover’s delight; Asian
elephants are known to wander directly onto the grounds.
There’s also an abundance of birds to watch over breakfast, plus the food and service are both sublime.
Tri, Ahangama
While this lakeside property has been around for a while, it’s only just been taken over by Teardrop Hotels (one of Sri Lanka’s leading boutique hotel groups), which has breathed new life into Tri and its cinnamon plantation site.
Sunset villas with private plunge pools are the suites to opt for pretty views out across the surrounding lake, plus they’re yet to make an appearance on TikTok.
Elsewhere, there’s a peaceful yoga shala, library room enshrined in jungle and a stunning infinity pool that appears to blend right into magical Koggala Lake below.
Just a 15-minute drive away is the surf/holiday hotspot of Ahangama, where cafes, bars and boutique stores all fully appeal to the Insta crowds with photogenic interiors.
To see the quieter side of the area, hop onto a boat for a dreamy afternoon on the water surrounded by birdlife and the occasional fisherman.
Ayr Castle 1922, Labugama
It’s not just tourists. Even locals don’t know about this hidden castle with an intriguing backstory, just an hour and a half from Sri Lanka’s capital, Colombo.
Built in 1922 by a British tea-estate worker to help woo a Scottish love interest, the relationship soured before the building was completed, leaving the Brit not only heartbroken but jobless after he was dismissed for spending too much time on the project.
Luckily, today, Ayr Castle has been transformed into a five-bedroom hotel, with glorious views out across rubber plantations and on clear days, it’s even possible to see Colombo’s skyline and the unmistakable Lotus Tower.
They serve a great rice and curry lunch, while the vibe of the castle is super relaxed, with wide terraces from where to enjoy the views, a pretty swimming pool and spacious bedrooms.
Jetwing Mahesa Bhawan, Jaffna
Aside from serving what might just be the best crab curry in Sri Lanka, alongside an ever-changing spread of unforgettable home-cooked dishes, Mahesa Bhawan is the perfect base for exploring the country’s northernmost region.
After decades of isolation during Sri Lanka’s civil war, Jaffna and nearby Point Pedro reveal a completely different side of the island, where ancient temples, idyllic offshore islands and vast, empty beaches are lined with colourful fishing boats and rust-red nets drying in the sun.
It’s one of my favourite areas of the country.
Still largely under the radar and rarely seen on social media, this four-bedroom villa feels like one of Sri Lanka’s best-kept secrets.
No.5 (Ena de Silva House), Lunuganga, Bento
Tucked within the enchanting grounds of Lunuganga, the Ena de Silva House (also known as No. 5) is one of Sri Lanka’s most special stays.
And despite its extraordinary story and striking design, it’s surprisingly under the radar online.
Originally located in Colombo, the house was painstakingly dismantled and rebuilt at Lunuganga, with every floor tile carefully numbered and returned to its exact original position.
Designed around a tranquil open courtyard, No.5’s three bedrooms
blend architectural brilliance with understated charm.
I especially love Ena’s bedroom, with its bright white open-air bathroom accented in blue.
Now, with a new swimming pool and the option to book the entire three-bedroom house, it’s an even more special retreat for those looking to experience one of Sri Lanka’s true hidden gems.
