Dwight Yorke
Former Manchester United striker Dwight Yorke has reiterated his interest in becoming head coach of Ghana’s senior national team, the Black Stars, citing the country’s footballing history and the quality of players at its disposal.
The Trinidad and Tobago legend is among the names linked with the vacant position following the departure of Carlos Queiroz, who left the role after Ghana’s disappointing start to the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) qualifiers.
Ghana suffered consecutive defeats against Ivory Coast and The Gambia in their opening Group C matches, leaving the four-time African champions bottom of the standings without a point.
Yorke, who has previously expressed his desire to manage the Black Stars, believes Ghana possess the talent to compete but must establish the right team culture and secure the commitment of its players.
“It’s a job I’d be interested in, given Ghana’s history and the players available,” Yorke told The Guardian.
“You look at the squad and your eyes open even wider.
“The conversation started there and then reached the media before I really knew it.
“The talent is there. Build the culture and get the players to buy in, and the football will follow,” he added.
Yorke enjoyed a successful playing career, most notably at Manchester United, where he won three Premier League titles and the UEFA Champions League as part of the club’s historic treble-winning campaign in the 1998/99 season.
Meanwhile, the Ghana Football Association (GFA) and the Ministry of Sports have appointed an interim technical team to oversee the Black Stars’ upcoming AFCON qualifying matches against Somalia.
Kim Lars Björkegren will lead the team, assisted by Ibrahim Tanko and Godwin Attram, while former Ghana goalkeeper Fatawu Dauda has been appointed goalkeeper trainer.
