Manchester United suffered another painful Premier League defeat on Sunday, losing 3-0 to Bournemouth at Old Trafford as questions mounted over manager Michael Carrick’s future.
Bournemouth took control before half-time, scoring twice in five minutes to leave the home side facing an uphill battle. Rayan opened the scoring in the 38th minute, finishing a move assisted by Justin Kluivert, before Marcus Tavernier doubled the visitors’ lead in the 43rd minute following an assist from Adrien Truffert.
United struggled to find a response after the break, and Bournemouth extended their advantage in the 71st minute when Evanilson scored from a pass by Lewis Cook.
The result capped a miserable afternoon for United, whose players struggled to contain Bournemouth’s attacks or create enough clear chances to threaten a comeback.
Former Crystal Palace striker Clinton Morrison, speaking on BBC Radio 5 Live, described Bournemouth’s display as “outstanding” and said the visitors had delivered a comfortable performance despite the pressure of being favourites.
Morrison also compared United’s showing with their recent 4-1 defeat by Como, saying: “It’s been the same as the Como performance. You can say they’ve ran around a little bit more but you’re Manchester United football club, you should be running around. If you don’t want to, ask nicely not to be picked.”
The defeat intensified scrutiny of Carrick. The United manager was seen applauding the home supporters and making what appeared to be a full lap of the pitch, although there was no confirmation that he was leaving the club.
The atmosphere at Old Trafford deteriorated as the game wore on, with sections of the home crowd leaving before the final whistle. Bournemouth, meanwhile, celebrated a convincing away victory that deepened United’s troubles.
