Tesla demonstrated its next-generation Roadster at an event near Waco, Texas, on Thursday, October 15. The electric sports car drove upside down, briefly flew and performed aerial maneuvers using SpaceX-inspired thrusters and suction technology. The demonstration highlighted Tesla’s ambitious performance goals for a vehicle first announced in 2017.
During the event, Tesla claimed the Roadster accelerated from zero to 60 mph in just 0.81 seconds. The prototype climbed an inverted ramp, launched into the air, rotated and returned to the ground. However, the spectacular demonstration involved specialized technology, and independent testing has not verified the acceleration claim.
How the Tesla Roadster Performed Its Stunts
The prototype used a fan-based suction system to cling to a curved ramp while driving upside down. Tesla says the system generates substantial downforce, helping the vehicle maintain contact with the surface. SpaceX-developed cold-gas thrusters then helped the car rotate in midair and control its landing.
The demonstration vehicle operated without a driver during the stunts, highlighting the experimental nature of the technology. The thrusters offer more than conventional electric motor power, raising questions about safety, practicality and road legality. Tesla CEO Elon Musk acknowledged those concerns during the event.
Musk described the extreme performance as a technology showcase rather than a major financial driver. The company has not confirmed that every demonstrated feature will reach production in its current form.
Production Remains Years Away
Tesla first revealed the next-generation Roadster in 2017 and originally targeted production much earlier. The company now aims to begin production in 2028, although important commercial details remain uncertain. Tesla has not announced a final price or confirmed when customer deliveries will begin.
The company lists Performance and Thrust versions, while the Rocket variant remains invitation-only. The Thrust version includes acceleration thrusters, while the Rocket model targets more extreme maneuvers. Reservation deposits vary by configuration, and the final specifications may change before production.
The Roadster’s latest appearance renews interest in Tesla’s long-delayed electric supercar. Still, the flight demonstration does not establish that a production vehicle can safely perform these stunts on public roads.
Musk also warned that the vehicle is “not necessarily a safety-optimized car,” underlining the risks surrounding its extreme performance claims.
