Filmmaker Steven Soderbergh is set to complete the remaining portions of The Batman Part II following Matt Reeves’ temporary break from the project to focus on a family matter.
Pattinson is set to reprise his role as the Caped Crusader in Reeves’ follow-up to the 2022 film The Batman, which presented the superhero story as a crime noir rather than a conventional action-driven comic-book film.
Warner Bros. and DC Studios have temporarily halted production on The Batman Part II as director Matt Reeves has taken a break to attend to a family matter.
According to a representative of Warner Bros and DC Studios, Soderbergh, an admirer of Reeves, volunteered to assist with the Robert Pattinson-led film.
“As Matt Reeves continues to attend to an ongoing family matter, Steven Soderbergh, as an admirer of Matt’s work, approached Matt and will step in, with the full support of DC Studios, to help the writer-director complete the final weeks of principal photography on The Batman Part 2,” the representative said in a statement.
“Matt and Steven will work closely together with the actors and crew to fulfill Matt’s vision of the film,” the source added. ‘
Expressing gratitude to Soderbergh in a post on X, Reeves clarified that he remains associated with the project and thanked the filmmaker for helping complete the shoot. “Just to be clear, I am not leaving The Batman Part II. I am profoundly grateful to Steven for coming to my aid during this challenging time to help me finish principal photography. Thank you to all for your concern and well wishes,” read the note.
Known for his experimental storytelling across independent cinema and mainstream Hollywood, Soderbergh won the Palme d’Or at Cannes for his debut film Sex, Lies, and Videotape (1989) and the Academy Award for Best Director for Traffic (2000).
His other notable credits include the Ocean’s trilogy, Erin Brockovich (2000), Contagion (2011) and Magic Mike (2012).
The Batman Part II is currently in production and is scheduled to hit theatres on February 18, 2028.
In The Batman, Pattinson’s Bruce Wayne is in his second year of operating as a vigilante in Gotham City when he begins investigating a series of murders committed by the Riddler, a sadistic serial killer targeting the city’s corrupt elite.
Reeves’ interpretation also portrayed Bruce as a recluse who largely shuns his public persona, neglects his responsibilities as a billionaire and remains withdrawn from society. He struggles to maintain a distinction between his life as Bruce Wayne and his existence as Batman, with his vigilante identity consuming much of his life.
