Torremolinos is preparing a major upgrade for its seafront, with new toilets, shaded areas, walkways and specialist bathing equipment planned at ten beach locations.
For anyone who finds a day on the sand difficult to manage, the plans could make a real difference. Facilities will be designed to help people reach the beach, stay there comfortably and enter the sea with greater safety and independence.
New accessible facilities planned
Contracts are split into four lots covering the supply and installation of accessible beach equipment, the construction works required to put it into service, and technical assistance, site management and health-and-safety coordination.
Improvements include:
– Accessible toilets, including facilities adapted for people who use a stoma bag
– Changing rooms, storage areas and support facilities
– Accessible walkways and platforms across the sand
– Pergolas, benches and planters to create shade and comfortable rest areas
– Amphibious equipment for assisted bathing
The amphibious equipment is intended to help people with reduced mobility and others who need assistance get in and out of the water. Council documents state that the aim is to enable access to, and use of, the beaches “in conditions of autonomy and safety”.
Ten beach locations included
Work will take place from El Saltillo to Los Alamos at ten sites: El Saltillo; La Carihuela-Plaza del Remo; Rincon del Sol; Bajondillo-Melia; Bajondillo-Playamar; Copacabana; Playamar-Tres Caballos; Playamar-Hospital Maritimo; Los Alamos 1; and Los Alamos 2.
Existing services will be renewed and expanded rather than just replaced. The works also include demolition, earthworks, foundations, drainage and water-supply networks, electrical connections and pavement repairs.
Who the improvements are for
Torremolinos council says the project gives particular attention to older people, disabled people, people with reduced mobility, stoma bag users and others with specific needs. It is also intended to improve conditions for the wider public by upgrading beach routes, rest areas and public services.
What happens next
Companies can submit offers for the works until November 19. Once a contractor is appointed, the works will cover both equipment installation and the infrastructure needed to make the new facilities operational.
For Torremolinos’ large international community, the project should mean fewer barriers to enjoying some of the coasts finest beaches, whether that means an easier route onto the sand, somewhere shaded to rest, or support to enjoy a swim in the glorious Mediterranean.
