The Jebel Marra Civil Authority, which operates in central Darfur areas controlled by the Sudan Liberation Movement (SLM) led by Abdel Wahid al-Nur, launched a wide-ranging media campaign on Thursday to highlight what it described as catastrophic humanitarian conditions and famine affecting the population.
Mohamed Youssef Foukiama, media adviser to the head of the Civil Authority, told Radio Tamazuj that the authority had declared famine in areas under the movement’s control on 8 September 2026.
“As a result of the famine, deaths linked to acute malnutrition have increased as of 8 October 2026, particularly among vulnerable groups, including children, pregnant and breastfeeding women, and older people,” he said, adding that fatalities were being reported daily.
He also warned of the spread of dengue fever, malaria and typhoid, calling on international, regional and local organizations to intervene urgently to avert further humanitarian suffering.
