The RK3588 puts four Cortex-A76 cores, four Cortex-A55 cores, a Mali-G610 GPU and an NPU into boards small enough to mount behind a display or inside a compact server. For a fall 2026 build, the more useful differences are often around that processor: Ethernet ports, USB connections and the lanes available to an SSD.
These four picks cover different hardware requirements, based on their published specifications. They're a shortlist to investigate, rather than a speed ranking from tests on the same software image.
The RK3588 specs and performance guide covers the processor's architecture in more detail. For these picks, storage and peripheral connections explain more of the selection than another comparison of the same CPU cores.
Radxa ROCK 5B Plus
The ROCK 5B+ has two M.2 M-Key connectors, each wired for PCIe 3.0 x2, along with a 2.5GbE port, onboard Wi-Fi 6 and memory configurations up to 32GB. Radxa also provides HDMI input and MIPI camera connections.
Two SSD slots are useful if you want separate drives for the operating system and recorded footage, without putting the second drive behind a USB adapter. But each slot gets two PCIe lanes, so compare the layout with a single x4 slot before assuming the newer board gives every drive a faster connection.
For a storage project, check the case as carefully as the board. Both drives need to fit with the cooling hardware installed, and a second SSD adds heat and power consumption as well as capacity.
KiwiPi 5 Pro
KiwiPi 5 Pro has four USB 3.0 host ports, two 2.5GbE ports and an M.2 2280 slot connected over PCIe 3.0 x4. Memory options go up to 32GB of LPDDR4X, and the specifications also list Wi-Fi 6, Bluetooth and onboard eMMC storage.
The four USB ports are a good reason to put it on this list. Connect a USB camera, an external drive and a couple of peripherals, and you still have the NVMe slot available for storage; on a board with fewer ports, you'd already be looking for a hub and somewhere to put it.
That makes the 5 Pro worth considering for a camera application that also records locally, or a small server with several attached devices. Choose the RAM configuration for the application, though—32GB won't improve a workload that already fits comfortably in 8GB, and the USB port count alone doesn't establish simultaneous transfer speeds.
Orange Pi 5 Plus
Orange Pi 5 Plus combines two 2.5GbE interfaces with a PCIe 3.0 x4 M.2 connection, HDMI input and two HDMI outputs. It also has a separate M.2 E-Key slot for a wireless module, which leaves the NVMe connector available for an SSD.
That combination is useful when an application needs to receive traffic on one network and send results over another, or when a development setup needs both video input and a local display. Two Ethernet ports don't establish routing performance by themselves; packet processing, firewall rules and the operating system still need testing.
Check whether your chosen package includes the wireless module. An available socket and an installed radio are different things, especially when you're comparing a bare board with a bundle that includes accessories.
FriendlyELEC NanoPC T6 Plus
The NanoPC-T6 Plus comes with 8GB, 16GB or 32GB of LPDDR5, two 2.5GbE ports and an M.2 slot wired for PCIe 3.0 x4. FriendlyELEC lists a 12V DC power input, optional metal enclosure and operating-system options including FriendlyWrt, OpenMediaVault, Debian and Ubuntu.
It's worth investigating for a network appliance or a server that will spend its time in an enclosure rather than on a desk. There's only one USB 3.0 Type-A port (plus a USB-C data connection), so count the actual peripherals before ordering; several USB cameras would change the expansion requirements quite quickly.
LPDDR5 is another difference from some RK3588 boards, but it isn't enough to predict an application's speed. The memory configuration, software and amount of data being moved all belong in the comparison.
Check the software before ordering
Start with the manufacturer's image and check the functions your build needs. A booting Linux desktop doesn't tell you whether camera capture, hardware decoding or the NPU works in your application, and moving to a different kernel can change which drivers are available.
For edge AI, test model conversion and the matching runtime before buying several boards. The advertised NPU rating is a peak arithmetic figure; measure the complete camera-to-result delay, including input preparation and any tracking or recording, with the model you actually intend to deploy.
Then add the power supply, cooling, storage and enclosure to the price. Run a sustained workload with those parts installed, because a short inference test won't show whether the finished system can hold its performance once it warms up.
Confirm the exact board revision, RAM option and included accessories with the seller. Those are the parts of this shortlist that need checking again when you're ready to order.
