The Chief of Defence Staff (CDS), General Olufemi Oluyede, has called for closer defence cooperation between Nigeria and Poland on border security and technology transfer.
He said the collaboration would go a long way to strengthen Nigeria’s ongoing counter-insurgency operations and improve the country’s capacity to tackle emerging security threats.
Gen Oluyede made the call when he received the Ambassador of the Republic of Poland to Nigeria, His Excellency Mr Michał Cygan, in his office at the Defence Headquarters in Abuja.
The CDS, in a statement signed by the Director, Defence Information, Major-General Samaila Uba, said the visit reiterated the need for both countries to explore ways to expand defence cooperation, particularly in areas that directly impact ongoing operations.
General Oluyede highlighted border security and technology transfer as priority areas, noting Poland’s rich pedigree and experience in border management and security.
The CDS expressed readiness for continued engagement with Polish defence stakeholders to deepen cooperation.
He said the courtesy visit adds to a series of defence-related engagements by the Polish envoy aimed at strengthening bilateral relations between Nigeria and Poland.
In his address, Ambassador Cygan, while commending the professionalism, resilience and operational effectiveness of the Armed Forces of Nigeria, noted that Nigeria’s strategic geographical position and sustained security engagements remain vital to peace and stability in West Africa and beyond.
He said, “Nigeria’s strategic position and sustained security engagements have continued to contribute significantly to peace and stability in the region,” describing Nigeria as a crucial stabilising force in the sub-region.
He added that there are several areas where Nigeria and Poland could deepen cooperation and share experiences for mutual benefit.
