Europe’s renewable hydrogen and e-fuels sector continues to gain momentum, with new developments spanning e-methane certification and offtake, electrolyser technology, large-scale green hydrogen projects and strategic investments. Recent announcements from companies including P2X Solutions, Stargate Hydrogen, ITM Power, Nel and Hy24
P2X Solutions is injecting renewable e-methane produced at its plant in Finland into the country’s natural gas network, enabling distribution to domestic customers and access to other European markets via the Balticconnector pipeline. Gasgrid, Finland’s state-owned gas transmission system operator, has issued the country’s first guarantees of origin for renewable e-methane produced at the facility. The certificates enable the renewable origin of the synthetic methane to be documented and verified, allowing customers to distinguish it from fossil natural gas. E-methane is produced by combining renewable hydrogen with captured carbon dioxide, creating a synthetic gas that can be transported and used through existing natural gas infrastructure. “Gasgrid has been issuing guarantees of origin for biomethane for almost five years and for hydrogen for around a year,” said the Finnish company. The issuance of the first e-methane certificates marks a further step in Finland’s efforts to integrate renewable gases into its energy system and facilitate their trade across European markets.tself.
Stargate Hydrogen launched a proprietary ceramic catalyst that reportedly increases the output efficiency of its alkaline electrolysers stacks to 48 kWh/kg while eliminating all dependency on iridium and other platinum-group metals (PGMs). The product is available in stacks up to 0.5 MW, with integration into the 5 MW stack underway. “Stargate Hydrogen’s factory currently produces 140 MW annually, with capacity expandable to 1 GW+ through incremental investment,” said the Estonia-based company.
ITM Power announced that its build-own-operate (BOO) subsidiary, Hydropulse, has signed Heads of Terms with a European oil refinery for a large-scale green hydrogen project. “The project in development comprises 150 MW of ITM Power’s Alpha electrolyser platform to produce green hydrogen on site under a 10-year agreement,” said the UK-based company. The parties are targeting Final Investment Decision (FID) in 2027, with hydrogen production expected to commence in 2029.
STX Group announced its first offtake of Renewable Fuel of Non-Biological Origin (Rfbno)-compliant e-methane, produced by Turn2X at its first commercial plant in Spain. “The first delivery of fully Rfnbo certified e-methane took place early in October 2026. The companies are also in active discussions to work together on future commercial-scale e-methane projects,” explained the Amsterdam-headquartered commodity trader.
Nel and Rheinmetall AG have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to explore joint opportunities in decentralised renewable fuel production. “The collaboration will combine Nel’s electrolyser technology with Rheinmetall’s Giga PtX concept and systems-integration expertise to assess scalable, modular solutions for the localised production of low-carbon synthetic fuels for defence and critical infrastructure applications”, said the Norwegian company. The Oslo-based company has also received a purchase order from an undisclosed US-based technology company for multiple containerized PEM electrolyser units, the MC-series, and related services, with a total value of about $12 million, said the Norwegian company, adding that the estimated delivery is in 2027. Nel’s MC-series is a containerized PEM electrolyser platform designed for scalable, reliable and efficient on-site hydrogen production.
Jera has invested in Koloma, a US-based natural hydrogen exploration and development company. Headquartered in Denver, Colorado, Koloma combines proprietary geological data, specialized exploration tools and field experience to identify and evaluate prospective natural hydrogen resources. The company has raised more than $400 million from investors including Breakthrough Energy Ventures, Khosla Ventures and Amazon, said the Japanese company.
Hy24 has signed an agreement with EDF’s venture capital arm to acquire Hynamics, a subsidiary of the EDF Group. The transaction could be completed in the first quarter of 2027, said the French asset manager and the world’s largest investment platform dedicated to low-carbon hydrogen. Hynamics produces and markets low-carbon hydrogen for the heavy mobility and industrial sectors through projects in France and the United Kingdom. “This transaction marks a new stage in Hynamics’ development, with the ambition of fostering the creation of a leading French and British low-carbon hydrogen champion,” said EDF.
