Authorities are on high alert as severe weather hits much of Greece, bringing floods, property damage and transport disruptions. In Skiathos, floodwaters swept away two parked cars. Heavy rain and traffic problems were reported in Attica. Schools in the Aegean islands and parts of Evia are closed today.
Eight areas are under Red Code alert. The National Meteorological Service (EMY) warns of heavy rain, storms and gale-force winds continuing into Wednesday, with improvement expected from Thursday night.
Areas of greatest concern:
- Evia (Red warning): heavy rain and storms until late afternoon
- Orange alert: Northeastern Peloponnese, eastern Central Greece, Attica, Cyclades, Halkidiki, Sporades, eastern Thessaly, Dodecanese and Crete
Northeasterly winds of 8–9 Beaufort, temporarily reaching 10, will affect the northern and central Aegean until late Wednesday night. There is also an increased risk of hail in the Aegean, especially the Dodecanese and Crete.
Attica can expect rain and possible storms, with winds of 6–8 Beaufort. Temperatures will drop further nationwide, with possible light snow on the highest peaks of Central Greece, Thessaly and the north.
