BATU PAHAT: The magistrate's court here is drawing media and public attention this morning as proceedings begin in the murder case of 16-year-old student Irene Sofiya Mohd Khairool Faisal.
She was killed at a secondary school in Yong Peng on Oct 3.
Several of Irene Sofiya's family members and members of the public were seen at the court as early as 8am to follow developments in the case.
The 16-year-old male student suspected of killing her is scheduled to be charged at the magistrate's court under Section 302 of the Penal Code for murder. Irene Sofiya was affectionately known as Fiya.
However, security has been tightened, with media personnel allowed to remain only on the court's ground floor.
The student was arrested at 7pm on Oct 3 and remanded the following day to assist in investigations.
Johor police chief Datuk Ab Rahaman Arsad had previously said the murder was believed to have stemmed from the suspect's resentment after the victim rejected his advances.
Rahaman said the finding was based on further investigations into the suspect, who was the victim's classmate.
He said police believed the act was driven by the suspect's resentment towards the victim for rejecting him.
However, he said investigators would continue to examine the motive as the investigation was still ongoing.
