The Director-General and Chief Executive Officer of the National Institute for Sports (NIS), Comrade Philip Shaibu, has congratulated the Oba of Benin, His Royal Majesty, Omo N’ Oba N’ Edo, Uku Akpolokpolo, Oba Ewuare II, on his 73rd birthday and the 10th anniversary of his coronation, describing the monarch as a symbol of unity, wisdom and cultural preservation.
Shaibu, the immediate past Deputy Governor of Edo State, said the Benin monarch’s decade on the throne had continued to inspire his subjects through his commitment to the preservation of the kingdom’s heritage, the promotion of peace and the strengthening of traditional institutions.
In a statement personally signed by him on Tuesday, Shaibu praised Oba Ewuare II’s leadership since his ascension to the throne in October 2016, noting that the monarch had continued to uphold the dignity of the Benin traditional institution and promote the cultural identity of his people.
The NIS chief also prayed for long life, sound health and divine wisdom for the monarch, wishing him a joyous birthday celebration and a memorable 10th coronation anniversary.
A decade on the throne
Oba Ewuare II was crowned the 40th Oba of Benin in October 2016, succeeding his father, the late Oba Erediauwa, who died in April of that year.
His reign represents an important chapter in the history of one of Africa’s most enduring traditional institutions, whose influence is deeply connected to the political, cultural and social identity of the Edo people.
The Benin monarchy has historically served as a custodian of the kingdom’s customs, traditions, arts and collective memory. Its palace remains an important centre for traditional authority, cultural ceremonies and engagement with communities, government officials and other stakeholders.
For Shaibu, the 10th anniversary offers an opportunity to recognise the monarch’s role in sustaining the institution and encouraging successive generations to value their heritage.
The anniversary celebrations, which began in October and are scheduled to run through November 2026, feature activities highlighting Benin culture, history, art and community life. The programme reflects the importance attached to the milestone by the palace and the wider Benin community.
Preserving Benin’s rich cultural heritage
One of the defining responsibilities of the Oba of Benin is the preservation of the kingdom’s cultural heritage, including its renowned artistic traditions, royal customs, language and historical artefacts.
The Benin Kingdom is internationally recognised for its sophisticated artistic legacy, particularly its bronze and brass works, ivory carvings and other objects associated with the royal court. These works represent centuries of craftsmanship and remain significant to discussions about African history, cultural identity and the restitution of looted artefacts.
The recovery and return of Benin artefacts taken during the 1897 British punitive expedition have also become important issues in contemporary cultural diplomacy. Efforts to return such objects have renewed public attention to the kingdom’s history and the need to preserve its heritage for future generations.
Oba Ewuare II has been associated with advocacy for the return of looted Benin artefacts and the protection of the kingdom’s cultural inheritance.
Shaibu’s congratulatory message places emphasis on these broader responsibilities of traditional leadership, describing the monarch as a source of wisdom and a figure whose reign should continue to inspire cultural pride and unity.
The recognition also underscores the relevance of traditional institutions in a modern society where cultural identity, community values and historical consciousness remain important elements of national life.
Monarch as a symbol of unity and peace
Shaibu described Oba Ewuare II as a symbol of unity and fatherly love, highlighting the value of leadership that encourages peaceful coexistence and strengthens the bonds among members of a community.
Traditional rulers continue to occupy important positions in Nigeria’s social structure, particularly in matters involving cultural preservation, community relations and the promotion of dialogue among different groups.
Although their constitutional roles differ from those of elected political officeholders, monarchs often serve as custodians of tradition and influential voices in community affairs.
In Edo State, the Benin throne carries particular historical and cultural significance. The Oba’s position connects the present generation with the kingdom’s long history, while the palace remains a focal point for the observance of traditional rites and the preservation of customs.
Shaibu’s tribute reflects the importance of recognising leadership that promotes continuity, peace and a sense of shared identity among the people.
His prayer for divine wisdom and continued good health also conveys the expectation that the monarch will sustain his responsibilities to the kingdom as he enters another year of life and marks a decade on the throne.
Shaibu’s connection to Edo State
Shaibu, who served as Deputy Governor of Edo State from 2016 to 2024, has maintained a public profile in the state’s political and administrative affairs. His message to the Oba comes from a former senior state official who served during part of the monarch’s reign.
As NIS Director-General and Chief Executive Officer, Shaibu now leads a federal institution responsible for professional training and capacity development within Nigeria’s sports sector.
His appointment has brought renewed attention to the institute’s role in developing coaches, sports administrators and other professionals needed to strengthen the country’s sporting system.
While his current responsibilities are focused on sports development, Shaibu’s congratulatory message highlights the continuing place of traditional institutions in public life and the importance of acknowledging cultural milestones.
His remarks also reflect the close relationship between the identity of Edo people and the Benin monarchy, whose historical influence extends beyond the state to Nigeria’s wider cultural heritage.
Anniversary marks a milestone for the Benin Kingdom
The 10th coronation anniversary is not only a personal milestone for Oba Ewuare II but also an occasion for the Benin Kingdom to reflect on its history, traditions and future.
The anniversary programme provides a platform for showcasing cultural practices and drawing attention to the kingdom’s artistic and historical contributions. It also offers opportunities for younger generations to engage with their heritage and understand the significance of the traditional institution.
As celebrations continue, the monarch’s birthday adds another dimension to the occasion, bringing together prayers for his personal wellbeing and hopes for the continued stability and development of the kingdom.
Shaibu expressed the hope that Oba Ewuare II would continue to enjoy good health, long life and divine guidance, while sustaining his commitment to the welfare of his people.
He wished the monarch a joyous birthday and a memorable 10th coronation anniversary, praying that the years ahead would bring greater peace, progress and prosperity to the Benin Kingdom, Edo State and Nigeria.
