The Classic Plus experience is getting new mechanics for "engaging depth." Rogue players, however, are already sharpening their pitchforks.
Blizzard has no intention of turning World of Warcraft: Forever's classes into retail spec sheets, but the studio has confirmed that some of vanilla's most barebones kits are getting new mechanics. Blizzard now admits that pressing one button for an entire raid tier wasn't exactly riveting gameplay. In an interview with TechRadar, the WoW: Forever team laid out its design philosophy for the upcoming Classic Plus experience. The goal is to "err on the side of simpler classes, but with engaging depth". The team added that "some classes in the Classic era were too simple, so those have gained a few mechanics to those."
How many mechanics?
Blizzard pointed to the beta as the benchmark. "The level of mechanical complexity found in the beta classes is indicative of our intentions," the team said. Translation: don't expect modern WoW rotations, but do expect more than spamming Frostbolt until your fingers cramp.
The design is anchored by four pillars: Nurture and Protect Social Experiences, Approachable and Familiar, World as the Main Character, and Journey before destination. Blizzard acknowledged that some specs had "wild power swings and/or sometimes uninteresting gameplay," and that the goal is to improve those without speeding up the game or making it overly complex.
The community reaction: Rogue players are not happy
The latest Forever beta patch notes left players asking Blizzard "why," with Rogue fans getting the worst of it. One Reddit reply to the patch notes joked, "Sick Rogue changes," followed by the obvious spoiler alert: there are none.
On the official forums, a Rogue thread complained that "rogues have received the least amount of changes (and it's not even remotely close), and most changes feel worse". Another player added that "energy feels worse" and that Rogues are "behind in dps" with no clear path to the top single-target spot Blizzard supposedly wants for them.
The frustration isn't limited to Rogues. Caster classes like Druid, Priest, and Shaman did see tweaks, but the reception has been lukewarm at best. One fan summed it up: "They're committed to making casters feel bad at low levels". The Shaman's Lightning Bolt adjustments, in particular, were described by one player as "0 meaningful changes" (via YahooTech).
Blizzard plans to batch class changes rather than trickle them out, with weekly balance updates expected during the first six months. The studio says it will gather performance data and adjust accordingly, though it wants to keep design changes rare once the game settles.
What to expect when Forever launches
WoW: Forever launches on November 4. The beta is live now, which means players have roughly three weeks to argue about whether a 3-4 button rotation is Classic enough before the game actually comes out.
The bigger question is whether Blizzard can thread the needle it has set for itself. Forever is meant to live alongside both Classic and retail, offering a version of vanilla that feels familiar but not stagnant. Adding mechanics to classes that were "too simple" is a reasonable middle ground on paper. Whether the Rogue community agrees is another question; one that Blizzard is going to have to answer, and hopefully sooner rather than later.
