By Breaking Belize News Staff: A 26-year-old Belize City construction worker has been remanded to the Belize Central Prison after being charged with allegedly raping and assaulting his former girlfriend despite an existing protection order against him.
Shadron Gillett, of Iguana Street, appeared in the Belize City Magistrate’s Court on Monday, October 19, where he was charged with rape, harm and damage to property in connection with an incident involving a 28-year-old woman on July 2, 2026.
According to the allegations, the woman was resting on her verandah around 3 p.m. when Gillett approached her and insisted on speaking with her. She reportedly reminded him of the protection order and demanded that he leave.
The woman told police that when she attempted to record him with her cellphone, Gillett grabbed the device and smashed it. During a subsequent struggle, he allegedly damaged another cellphone before the confrontation moved into her bedroom.
The complainant alleged that Gillett grabbed her by the neck, ordered her to stop screaming for help and struck her in the head with a surge protector before sexually assaulting her.
During the alleged attack, the woman’s son reportedly knocked on the door. Gillett allegedly ordered him to leave, but the woman urged her son to remain. She further alleged that Gillett punched her in the mouth before fleeing the residence.
Police subsequently charged Gillett with rape, harm and damage to property involving two cellphones valued at a combined $1,300.
No plea was taken on the rape charge, which is an indictable offence to be tried before the High Court.
Gillett was offered bail of $5,000 with one surety of the same amount or two sureties of $2,500 each. His bail conditions prohibit him from interfering with the complainant or her family and require him to remain at least 100 yards away from her.
However, he was unable to meet bail and was remanded to prison until he can do so. His next court appearance is scheduled for December 28, 2026.
