A Panama health center shooting left two patients wounded on Saturday 17 October 2026, the Ministry of Health (Minsa) said. It happened in the waiting room of the Veracruz Health Center in Panamá Oeste province.
Panamá Oeste lies just west of the Panama Canal and Panama City, an area US visitors, investors and retirees know well. The coverage reviewed names no foreign national among the wounded, and no names or ages have been released.
Minsa said both patients were stabilised and taken by ambulance to Hospital Santo Tomás in Panama City. National Police units went with them, and the health center closed for repairs on Sunday 18 October.
What Minsa Says About the Panama Health Center Shooting
Minsa said the firearm incident happened at about 1:00 p.m. on Saturday 17 October, in the waiting room of the Veracruz Health Center. That is about 2:00 p.m. US Eastern time, because Panama keeps UTC-5 all year.
Staff on duty gave both patients immediate care, the ministry said, and the pair were stabilised before the transfer. The health center’s own ambulance took them to Hospital Santo Tomás, with National Police units alongside.
Minsa described those hurt only as patients and gave no names, ages or medical condition. No names are used here.
TVN, Panamá América and La Prensa carried the same account on Saturday afternoon and evening, each citing the ministry’s statement. La Prensa also embedded the ministry’s own post on X, which repeats the closure and reopening dates.
Why the Veracruz Health Center Closed for a Day
Minsa said the closure on Sunday 18 October would allow repairs to the damage caused by the incident. It added that the pause would let officials coordinate steps to protect staff and users.
Minsa urged residents who need care in the meantime to go to the nearest health facility. The health center reopens on Monday 19 October, and its regular hours run from 7:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m.
The ministry did not say how large the damage was or which security measures it plans. Whether guards, cameras or police posts will be added is not stated in the statement as carried by the outlets.
Veracruz and Gun Violence in Panamá Oeste
Veracruz is a corregimiento, a local district, within the Arraiján district of Panamá Oeste province. El Siglo, a Panama City daily, wrote on 17 October that shootings are frequent there.
That report concerned a different case, a shooting on the night of 17 September in the Koskuna sector of Veracruz. Prosecutors in Panamá Oeste won provisional detention for three men investigated for attempted homicide and criminal association.
The three are suspects and have not been convicted, and the coverage reviewed does not link them or that case to Saturday’s incident. El Siglo’s headline says gangs want to take over Veracruz, which is the newspaper’s own description, and no official source reviewed attributes the clinic shooting to a gang.
Preliminary figures in the Public Ministry’s September 2026 report, published on 15 October, count 454 homicide victims nationwide from 1 January to 30 September. Of these, 41 were in Panamá Oeste, about 9% of the national total.
Panamá province recorded 195 victims, or 43%, and the San Miguelito district alone recorded 85. Those counts cover homicides only, so they do not show how many people were wounded by gunfire.
What It Means for You
Residents of Panamá Oeste can expect the Veracruz clinic to work its normal 7:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. schedule again from Monday 19 October. Anyone who needs care before then is told to use the nearest health facility.
Travellers should read current official guidance before a trip, because conditions can change quickly. The US State Department publishes its Panama travel advisory at travel.state.gov, and readers should check the current level there.
One incident at one health center does not describe a whole province, and the one-day closure points to a contained disruption. For wider context, see Panama’s Murder Wave Defies Curfews and Tests Mulino’s Crime Pledge and Panama in Latin America, Its Role, Weight and Alliances.
What Is Not Known
No source reviewed says who fired the shots, how many people were involved or what the motive was. The coverage reviewed also reports no arrest and no suspect description.
The condition of the two patients after they reached Hospital Santo Tomás is not stated. It is also unclear whether they were the intended targets or were hit by chance.
Minsa has not said what damage the clinic suffered or which security steps it will add. The communiqué itself could not be opened, so the account rests on the ministry’s statement as carried by TVN, Panamá América and La Prensa.
