Ministry of Education Permanent Secretary for Administration, Noriana Muneku, has implored the ministry staff to make cleanliness an everyday work culture rather than limiting it to national commemorations.
Ms Muneku says cleanliness should be embraced as a way of life rather than a temporary activity, stressing that everyone has a role to play in keeping the environment clean.
Speaking during a cleaning exercise at the Ministry’s premises in Lusaka today ahead of Zambia’s 62nd Independence Anniversary, Ms Muneku emphasised that the ministry’s surroundings should remain clean and presentable at all times.
Ms Muneku urged the administration department to take the lead in maintaining high standards of cleanliness, stressing that staff must demonstrate their commitment through consistent action.
And Lusaka Mayor, Chitambala Mwewa, called on members of the public to take responsibility for maintaining cleanliness around their premises and trading in designated market places.
Mr Mwewa expressed concern over the disposal of plastic waste into drainage systems, which he attributed to trading activities conducted in undesignated areas.
He said traders should operate from markets to promote proper waste management and ensure that business activities are conducted in appropriate environments.
Mr Mwewa further called for high standards of cleanliness along the road between the Ministry of Education and the Ministry of Finance, saying the area should be spotless.
He urged the public to support efforts to relocate traders to designated markets, emphasising that the initiative represents a permanent change in the way trading and environmental cleanliness are managed.
