Emphasising the State Government's commitment to public welfare and inclusive celebrations, Food, Civil Supplies and Consumer Affairs Minister Sushanta Chowdhury on Saturday launched a special festival assistance programme under which every ration card-holding family in Tripura will receive 2 kg of flour, 1 kg of sugar and 500 grams of semolina (suji) completely free of cost.
Launching the programme, the Minister said the initiative reflects the government's resolve to ensure that the spirit of Sharadiya Durga Puja and Diwali reaches every household, irrespective of economic circumstances.
He stated that the government believes festivals should be celebrated by all sections of society with equal enthusiasm and dignity, and therefore special measures have been taken to support families through the public distribution system.
"Our objective is to ensure that the joy of the festive season reaches every home. We want every family to celebrate Durga Puja and Diwali with happiness and enthusiasm. This initiative is part of the government's commitment to stand beside the people and share in their festive celebrations," Chowdhury said.
The Minister formally inaugurated the state-wide distribution drive by handing over the free food items to ration beneficiaries under Fair Price Shop No. 1 at Ranirbazar in Jirania subdivision. He also inaugurated the programme at Fair Price Shop No. 61 near Pragati School in Krishnanagar, where departmental officials and local beneficiaries were present.
Under the special festival package announced by the Food, Civil Supplies and Consumer Affairs Department, every ration card-holder family in the state will receive 2 kilograms of flour, 1 kilogram of sugar and 500 grams of semolina free of charge. The initiative has been introduced as a one-time festive benefit aimed at providing additional support to consumers during one of the most important festive periods of the year.
Speaking on the occasion, Chowdhury said public welfare remains at the centre of the government's policies and that the administration is continuously working to ensure that essential commodities reach people in a timely and affordable manner. He noted that rising household expenses often place pressure on families during festivals, and the free distribution programme is intended to ease that burden to some extent.
The Minister further stated that the government's objective goes beyond providing food assistance and seeks to reinforce a sense of inclusion so that no family feels left out during major celebrations. According to him, welfare-oriented initiatives such as this demonstrate the administration's human-centric approach towards governance.
Officials of the Food, Civil Supplies and Consumer Affairs Department were present during the launch of the programme and oversaw the commencement of distribution through the fair price shop network. Beneficiaries welcomed the initiative, expressing hope that the additional support would help families meet festive requirements more comfortably.
The distribution programme has now commenced through fair price shops across the state and is expected to benefit a large number of ration card holders. With Durga Puja festivities recently concluded and preparations for Diwali gathering pace, the initiative is being viewed as a significant welfare measure aimed at ensuring that the celebrations can be enjoyed by families across Tripura.
