Kangpokpi, Oct 15: Security forces have recovered the severed head of Ajinpou Ringkamai, a 52-year-old Naga man killed in an attack in Manipur’s Kangpokpi district on October 10, five days after the incident.
A joint team of the Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) and Manipur Police recovered the remains from a nearby forest on October 14, hours before a 48-hour deadline issued by Naga civil society organisations was due to expire.
Ringkamai was among four Naga men killed when armed militants allegedly launched an attack at Makui village. His head was severed and taken away following the assault.
After the recovery, the remains were transported to the mortuary at the Jawaharlal Nehru Institute of Medical Sciences (JNIMS) in Imphal.
The Joint Tribes Council (JTC-Manipur) had earlier halted post-mortem examinations of Ringkamai and another victim, 48-year-old Dibambou Ringkangmai. The council had demanded the recovery of the missing head to ensure a dignified burial, along with the arrest of three named suspects — Thangboi Kipgen, David Hangsing and Dr. Sailen Haokip.
The allegations against the three individuals have not been independently verified.
The JTC had also accused the state and central governments of failing to rein in armed groups operating under the Suspension of Operations (SoO) agreement.
The recovery comes amid tensions following the killings and pressure from Naga civil society organisations for action in the case. While it addresses one of the key demands raised by the community, further details regarding the investigation, the action against the named suspects and the resumption of post-mortem examinations are awaited.pou The head was taken to JNIMS in Imphal.
