What you need to know:
- Kangaroos turned two goals from Musa Kasolo into a trophy-winning campaign at Kibuli, with Ronald Yiga also playing a pivotal role as the yellow-clad side claimed the top prize. But the Golden Boots Uganda tournament offered more than football and cash, pairing the competition with SRHR activities and a platform for inclusive participation.
Kangaroos turned their finishing power into silverware, winning the Amputee Football Mini-Tournament organised by Golden Boots Uganda at Kibuli Playground on October 10.
The yellow-clad side finished top of the three-team standings with four points after opening with a 2-1 victory over Active Crutches before holding Big Boots to a goalless draw.
Musa Kasolo was the difference-maker for the champions, scoring both goals against Active Crutches to give Kangaroos the early advantage that ultimately proved decisive.
Nation Media Group (NMG) Uganda’s Accounts Assistant Ronald Yiga also featured for the winners, playing a pivotal role as Kangaroos combined their individual quality with the teamwork needed to lift the trophy.
Big Boots, who wore white, finished second on two points after drawing 2-2 with Active Crutches and playing out a goalless stalemate with the champions. Active Crutches, in red, settled for third place on one point.
Kasolo leads the way
Kasolo’s brace made him the standout scorer for Kangaroos, while Active Crutches relied on Muhammad Gaddafi, who scored both of his side’s goals in the tournament.
Big Boots had Joshua Muhumuza and Jacob Mushabe on the scoresheet, each scoring once in their 2-2 draw against Active Crutches. The result gave the white-clad side the points it needed to finish ahead of its red-shirted rivals.
The final standings reflected a closely contested mini-tournament, with Kangaroos taking the trophy, Big Boots finishing runners-up and Active Crutches completing the podium.
The rewards added to the occasion. Kangaroos received Shs500,000 for winning the competition, while Big Boots pocketed Shs200,000 for second place. Shalom won the ladies’ prize of Shs300,000, underlining the event’s commitment to inclusion beyond the men’s contest.
Football with a wider purpose
The tournament was more than a contest for goals and prize money. Organisers also used the gathering to promote Sexual and Reproductive Health and Rights (SRHR), with activities that included HIV testing and counselling, breast cancer awareness and screening, cervical cancer testing and condom distribution.
The health activities brought prevention, early detection and access to information into a sporting environment, widening the tournament’s impact beyond the pitch.
Women also participated in the event, reinforcing its inclusive approach and giving the ladies’ competition a place alongside the men’s tournament.
President of Amputee Football in Uganda, Lawrence Kitimbo, lauded the participants and urged them to maintain healthy lifestyles.
His message complemented the event’s wider aim of bringing people together through sport while encouraging health awareness and positive living.
Organised by Golden Boots Uganda, the October 10 mini-tournament at Kibuli Playground, opposite CMI, brought football, recognition and health outreach together in a single event.
The day offered a reminder that amputee football can create space for both sporting achievement and community wellbeing.
