Spot Bitcoin ETF flows are some of the most closely watched numbers in crypto.
According to new research from DWF Labs, those tallies may be telling you where Bitcoin has been, not where it is going.
The firm’s analysis of US spot Bitcoin ETF flows found that daily net inflows and outflows mostly reflect earlier price movements. They do not act as reliable leading indicators of future returns. ETF investors, in other words, behave like trend followers: they buy into rallies and sell into dips.
The numbers behind the trend
In the first half of 2026, spot Bitcoin ETFs recorded $5.4 billion in net outflows.
That marks the first negative half-year since the products launched in January 2024. Cumulative inflows for Bitcoin ETFs had reached $56.6 billion at the start of 2026, so the first-half outflows put a dent in the total without erasing the larger picture.
BlackRock’s IBIT accounted for 99.6% of April inflows, essentially carrying the entire category that month on its own. IBIT then saw approximately $5 billion in net outflows across May and June.
The sharpest stretch came between May 15 and June 3. Bitcoin ETFs logged a record 13 consecutive trading days of outflows, a streak that pulled $4.4 billion from fund holdings.
Not just a Bitcoin story
Spot ether ETFs also posted their first negative half, with net outflows of $1.47 billion over the same period.
Despite the red ink, DWF Labs said fundamentals in the digital asset sector remain strong, pointing to continued work on infrastructure and growing adoption.
What this means for investors and traders
For traders, the most practical lesson is about signal quality. If ETF flows follow price, then reacting to a strong inflow day may mean buying after a large part of the move has already happened.
The concentration in IBIT is another point worth watching. When one fund accounts for 99.6% of a month’s inflows, its holders effectively set the tone for the whole category. Then roughly $5 billion left the same fund across two months.
A $5.4 billion half-year outflow, alongside $1.47 billion leaving ether ETFs, shows that ETF demand is not a one-way street. The products that helped bring crypto into traditional brokerage accounts can also become a fast exit when prices weaken.
