KUALA LUMPUR: Gamuda Bhd today announced that an agreement to implement the Northern Perak Water Supply Scheme (NPWSS) has been signed between the State Government of Perak, Khazanah Air Perak Sdn Bhd (KAP), and Prasarana Air dan Irigasi Perak Sdn Bhd (PAIPP).
KAP is a 50:50 joint venture company between Gamuda and Perbadanan Kemajuan Negeri Perak (PKNPk), while PAIPP is KAP's wholly owned subsidiary.
In a Bursa Malaysia filing today, Gamuda said that under the NPWSS agreement, the state government will appoint KAP and PAIPP to develop, operate and maintain the NPWSS, with PAIPP responsible for the WTP scope and KAP responsible for the source works scope.
"The NPWSS agreement formalises PAIPP's appointment as the WTP operator to undertake the water treatment plant (WTP) Scope, including the right to abstract raw water for the Phase 1 WTP, and KAP's role in the source works scope," it said.
The NPWSS is a national project and a strategic initiative by the state and federal governments to mitigate long-standing water shortages for irrigation, domestic and industrial use in the northern region of Perak.
The NPWSS is designed to transfer up to 1,500 million litres per day (MLD) of raw water from Sungai Perak to Bukit Merah Dam, with 500 MLD designated for Northern Perak's immediate irrigation needs.
The balance of 1,000 MLD is intended to meet Perak's domestic and industrial water demands, including supplying treated water to Phase 2 of the Kerian Integrated Green Industrial Park (KIGIP), with any surplus for sale as treated water to Perbadanan Bekalan Air Pulau Pinang Sdn Bhd (PBAPP).
