Rescue teams rush to scene
One worker reportedly escaped the collapse unharmed, while another was retrieved from the rubble by residents at the scene and rushed to hospital with serious injuries.
A surviving worker told those present that six colleagues were believed to be trapped under the debris at the time.
Photos seen by TUKO.co.ke show rescue teams continue working to determine whether any additional workers could be reached beneath the rocks.
Residents from the surrounding area also joined the recovery effort, helping clear rubble by hand as they searched for those unaccounted for.
Authorities had yet to determine what caused the quarry wall to give way. The site is situated near the boundary between Meru and Tharaka Nithi counties, and workers there rely on stone extraction as their primary source of income.
